Video Cloud Service Solutions

Paul Cook's insight:

Cybermole 2 is basically your own mini ‘YouTube’ that also works a lot like a ‘Flixter’ video platform but with more usability and management control. .

On the management side you can:

Down load videos in several formats. Auto convert them to mp4's.Construct a play lists of video's ( a video course )Allow a user/student to access (several courses).Monitor a user's progress i.e. what videos have they watched (how much of the video did they watch)

On the user side :

You can logonView your course moviesPlay a movieUser testing in relation to video content

Stop a movie - rejoin a movie (Potential to login and carry on from where you left off. A built in seek function with memory).

Control of the system remotely using a mobile phone.

The users mobile phone can trigger the system on a pc, laptop or any other device that is connected to the internet.

The video system can also be run direct from the mobile device as well, provided the local bandwidth and service is adequate.

Telecoms and the Smart Grid—Looking Beyond Communications | Networking Exchange Blog

Telecoms and the Smart Grid—Looking Beyond Communications | Networking Exchange Blog | Cloud Service Solutions | Scoop.it

As utilities roll out Smart Grids, they are working more closely with telecommunication providers than ever before. For many in the energy industry, however, that relationship begins and ends with communications. In fact, communications is just one small part of the story. As the Smart Grid evolves—and as utilities’ data center and security requirements evolve with it—it’s time to take a closer look at the many other areas where telecoms can provide value.

Service providers like AT&T have been early entrants in cloud storage services, software-as-a-service (SaaS), and other cloud solutions that let customers “pay by the drink,” as we say, or pay for just those IT services they use, rather than building out full-blown data center services themselves. Just a couple years ago, utility executives I spoke with were skeptical of these kinds of services. A common refrain was, “Cloud storage, maybe, but we would never host applications in the cloud.” Today, that perception is changing.

Re: Moodle performance 1.9 versus 2.x (25% drop) by Michael Penney

Re: Moodle performance 1.9 versus 2.x (25% drop) by Michael Penney | Cloud Service Solutions | Scoop.it

Moodle 2 is slower. There is more going on under the hood that impacts performance on the one hand, and on the other hand the execellant and extensive work that Martin Langhoff et al. did on optimizing the 1.x series, has not be been done on 2.x.

Moodle 2 performance can be greatly improved by server side optimization - non-Moodle specialists often don't/can't do this - on the one hand most hosting companies want to have a single build of their server to reduce costs, and on the other hand they usually won't have the research data (sites with 100k+ Moodle users, for example) test optimizations against. You have to make choices in optimization, for example what works best for delivering HTML websites or Drupal may not be what is best for Moodle. If 90% of a company's revenue comes from hosting static HTML sites, they won't be able to afford to optimze their hosting platform for Moodle.

For example, where I used to work at Remote-Learner, we had (well RL still does, but I don' work there anymore) very large data sets to test optimizations on, a dedicated lab for testing, and a resulting highly optimized Moodle server configuration. Server configuration here meaning optimized SAN with specific hardware, Red Hat build, specific memory types, etc. It's very hard to find that on shared/commodity hosting, though I have seen some large universities (UCLA, for example) bring a similar level of effort to optimizing Moodle performance.

There are likely some improvements to be made in the software. I'd love to see core engage a Moodle Partner or large University client (you need a large dataset of users, courses (esp. LOTS of quizzes), and logs to test optimzations against) to do the same kind of software optimization work that was done on 1.x. However best results will always come from a dedicated Moodle hosting provider with expert staff and a hardware/software stack specifically optimized for Moodle.

eLearning in the Cloud.

eLearning in the Cloud. | Cloud Service Solutions | Scoop.it

E-learning, which can utilise tools such as VoIP and Tooway 6 connections, is likely to increasingly be facilitated through cloud computing.

This is according to chair for The Centre for Research into Online Communities and E-Learning Systems at Swansea University Jonathan Bishop, who explained this will enable resources to be shared and programmes to be deployed more rapidly.

He claimed transferring between different universities will soon be encouraged to students through the Bologna Process, which will require internet connections such as satellite broadband in order to transfer personal details and grades between institutions.

Overall, this intends to establish a European Higher Education area that will be based on academic exchanges and cooperation between nations.

The expert remarked e-learning software will soon have to function across platforms, calling this "the major challenge" in this sector today.

Mobile devices will become a "core part of the industry" but are as separate from each other as PCs and Macs were in the 90s, Mr Bishop asserted.
