Discovery Health "What is a compounding pharmacist?"

Discovery Health "What is a compounding pharmacist?" | Pathway to Pharmacy | Scoop.it
What is a compounding pharmacist? Learn how a compounding pharmacist allows a physician to prescribe a very specific medication to a patient.
Chioma's insight:

Because I am interested in becoming a pharmacist who works in the research and development rather than clinical or retail part of the pharmaceutical industry, this article gave me a better idea of what they really do. Although it didn’t have all of the details, it summed almost everything up for me. I learned that compounding pharmacists play a huge role for the pediatric and veterinary patients who have allergic reactions or bad symptoms to the drugs mass-produced in the market. It is important that compounding pharmacists know how to put two drugs together or even be able to make a topical cream that has the same effect as a drug that would be ingested and cause stomach pains or other bad side effects within the body. A compounding pharmacist works in a laboratory: a clean, safe area for drugs to be produced for patients with specific restrictions for their medications. From this article, so far it seems as though I really will enjoy working as a compounding pharmacist. I enjoy working with chemicals and working with a team so it sounds as though my dreams and desires will be achieved by being a compounding pharmacist working in research and development rather than working in a drug store.

Pharmacy Giants Try to Spark Interest in the Field

Pharmacy Giants Try to Spark Interest in the Field | Pathway to Pharmacy | Scoop.it
Two leaders in the pharmaceutical industry hope a new website will get students interested.
Chioma's insight:

I know it is a huge recommendation for students that plan on getting into university's schools of Pharmacy to get experience in pharmacy by volunteering and interning. This gives students an idea of how the pharmacy works and what the day to day challenges in a pharmacy are. By knowing what it is like before entering graduate school, it becomes easier for students to be successful. The creation of the website pharmacyforme.org will spark some interest in students to get moving on the road to finding mentors, internships, and volunteer work in the pharmacy industry. Students will also get help on their homework from this website. It teaches young students about pharmacy and gives them an idea of what they are getting into. It is going to be a great idea for students to visit this website and get an early start on their path to a career in pharmacy. I think this is a valuable article because it provides a source for internship opportunities in pharmacy and other sciences for high school students.

What Are the Different Pharmacy Careers? (with pictures)

What Are the Different Pharmacy Careers? (with pictures) | Pathway to Pharmacy | Scoop.it
There are many different types of pharmacy careers, including that of pharmacist, clinical pharmacist, pharmaceutical researcher...
Chioma's insight:

This article taught me a lot about the different types of pharmacists. I was not aware of how a pharmacist is such a broad name; there are so many different sub-branches of pharmacy. Depending on what you are personally interested in, what type of location you would like to work in, or how much pay you are looking for in your career, you chose a certain type of pharmacist you would like to be. There are differing locations where pharmacists do their job: a hospital, a lab, or a drug store. These settings are so different, so the personalities, education, and preferences of the people working in them are corresponding. I, personally, am interested by what they said about research pharmacists and hospital pharmacists. I learned from this article the duties of the pharmacists and it gives me a more specific idea of what I will be doing when I grow up. By knowing these different types of pharmacists, it will guide me to make the right choices for college courses. For example, for a research pharmacist, I will need a more heavy background in science, therefore I will take more biology and especially, chemistry classes. I learned the wages for these different types of pharmacists are correspondent with the type of work that they do, as well. A retail pharmacist most likely gets paid the most out of all the types because of the long hours they work and the intense labor. This article gave me and overall description of all different types of pharmacists, so now I can go deeper into research about the ones I am interested in.
