How to Buy Grassfed Meats | American Grassfed Association

How to Buy Grassfed Meats | American Grassfed Association | Pasture raised, Grass fed Pigs | Scoop.it
Grass-fed meats are showing up everywhere—in grocery stores, at farmer’s markets, and on the menus of burger joints and fine dining restaurants. Why? Because, compared to grain-fed, the meat is healthier for people (it has a more nutritious fat profile and more vitamins and minerals), is healthier for the environment, and has a more delicious flavor profile. There’s also the issue of humane treatment: Grass-fed animals living on open pasture almost always enjoy a better life than their grain-fed counterparts who spend the last months of their lives confined to feedlots.

Donkeys on the Haven!

Donkeys on the Haven! | Pasture raised, Grass fed Pigs | Scoop.it
We had found on Craigslist some folks who were parting with 6 donkeys. My good friend, and fellow ranch owner, Andrew Siemer and I loadced up the kids and we headed to New Braunfels to pick of these donkeys. When we arrive the donkeys were so docile and friendly. Real lovers! The sad part was they had so many wounds on them. Bite marks, puncture wounds, open flesh wounds, they were malnourished, it was heart wrenching.

Red Wattle Hogs

Is a large, reddish brown hog, their hair is around an inch long. They have a red fleshy growth hanging from either side of the neck, called a wattle. They have a relatively small snout compared to many other breeds. They average 600-800 pounds when grown, but have been known to reach 1500 pounds. As you would expect the male is larger than the female. The stand roughly 4 feet tall, and are 8 feet in length.

They are great foragers, which suits them well to pasture raising. They produce a lean flavorful meat.

They are currently on the critically endangered list of the American Livestock Conservancy.
