Why should we trust scientists, anyway?

Why should we trust scientists, anyway? | Passionate About Science and Technology! | Scoop.it

"Naomi Oreskes, a Harvard professor of history of science, tackles that question in a recent TED video. Oreskes co-authored Merchants of Doubt, which told the story of a small group of corporate-funded scientists "who fought the scientific evidence and spread confusion on many of the most important issues of our time," such as climate change..."

Olgy Gary's insight:

"You shouldn't just trust scientists. What you should trust is the process scientists use to show why you *shouldn't* trust them." --Ezra Klein

DeepMind’s new robots learned how to teach themselves

"Watching a robot arm fumble around in a box may not seem impressive at first, especially if you’ve seen similar looking robots build furniture. But the amazing part is that this particular machine isn’t following a program or doing something it was designed for. It’s just a robot trying to figure out how to make a human happy."

Metabolic Slowing and Reduced Oxidative Damage with Sustained Caloric Restriction Support the Rate of Living and Oxidative Damage Theories of Aging | Passionate About Science and Technology! | Scoop.it
Calorie restriction (CR) has been shown to have health benefits and to extend lifespan
in diverse species. Redman et al. conducted a 2-year CR trial in healthy, non-obese
humans and found evidence that prolonged CR enhances resting energy efficiency, resulting
in decreased systemic oxidative damage.

On the Frontiers of Physics, Math and Philosophy

On the Frontiers of Physics, Math and Philosophy | Passionate About Science and Technology! | Scoop.it
Quantum mechanics should be able to explain not just the results of highly esoteric experiments involving electrons and photons and particle collisions, but also why the ordinary world around us appears the way it is and why, for example, our macroscopic measuring devices actually yield results. I like to think about this as a constraint on the construction of quantum theories. We know that the old classical physics was able to give us a pretty good rough picture of how macroscopic objects like cannonballs and measuring devices behave when they're thrown about. So any quantum successor to classical physics had better be able to explain why classical physics was and is so successful, even if it's not completely correct.

Continuing the End Times series, Richard Marshall interviews Benjamin H Feintzeig.
