Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance - There's one trait more important to success than talent

Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance - There's one trait more important to success than talent | Pasi on Management & Leadership | Scoop.it
Duckworth's research has identified four components of grit: interest, practice, purpose, and hope, which generally develop in that order. Interest, Duckworth says, is the seed of passion. You have to find something you genuinely love and find meaningful, or else there's no chance you'll want to pursue it for the long haul. Practice means constantly wanting to improve on the area that interests you, and committing to challenging yourself on a daily basis. Purpose is about feeling like your work matters to you and to the rest of the world. Hope, which Duckworth says characterizes every stage of grit, involves the ability to keep going even when the going gets tough. Another key component of developing grit is finding a gritty mentor. Duckworth told us that your mentor can be anyone — your boss, your colleague, or your grandparent — who demonstrates passion and perseverance themselves. She said gritty mentors must provide both challenge and support.

The Zeigarnik Effect: The Need for Closure

The Zeigarnik Effect: The Need for Closure | Pasi on Management & Leadership | Scoop.it

First identified by gestalt psychologist Kevin Lewin, the zeigarnik effect is where we tend to remember incomplete tasks more often than tasks that are completed. This effect was first discovered in 1927 when Kevin Lewin sitting in a restaurant in Vienna noticed that waiters only remembered orders while they were in the process of being served thus incomplete, and when they were completed they later had little recollection of the orders they previously carried out if any recollection at all. This resulted in Kevins Lewin's student Bluma Zeigarnik theorizing that unfinished business or an incomplete task created ''psychic tension'' within us, and this tension can drive us to seek closure in regards to either unfinished business or an incomplete task.

Why Firms Need “Outduction” Programmes | Pasi on Management & Leadership | Scoop.it
Peter (not his real name) is a salesperson.  He had four jobs in six years.  His salary has been multiplied by two and half times over the same period.  The way he sees it, employers come and go.  “We are like medieval knights.  We bring our own armoury and we work for whomever needs us.”  His true loyalty is not to his employers but to his network whose members will support him in times of need.
Pasi Haaponiemi's insight:

Leavers are your friends & ambassadors! Outduction programmes are surely one of the little big things the successful organizations orchestrate.
