   When you graph a quadratic equation such as y=x^2 + 2x - 3, you get a parabola.  The minimum or maximum point is called the vertex.  The axis of symmetry is the vertical line that goes through the vertex.  The axis of symmetry of the parabola is determined by the formula x = -b/(2a).
