Vienna Gaels - Gaelic Football in Vienna, Austria

Vienna Gaels - Gaelic Football in Vienna, Austria | Pan European Build Up Round 2 Vienna. Austria | Scoop.it

Vienna Gaels Austria's only GAA club our wonderful hosts for the Second Round of the Pan European Football Campionships on October 13th. I am pretty sure Vienna Gaels will be attempting to follow on from a fine first round in Copenhagen and represent the East and Central region of European Gaelic Games well.  A club in existence since 2004 this will be a fantastic achievement for them to host a Pan European Championship and their organising committee have been working tirelessly to organise and promote this event with 23 teams and over 350 players. Viel Gluck Vienna. Hope to see you there. Check out the website www.gaavienna.at

To play Gaelic Games in Europe requires a commitment not needed or seen in Ireland. Your closest rival, is in some cases,

400miles away. The film "planes, trains and automobiles" comes to mind. This is not a case of roll out of bed on Sunday morning

and cycle down to the pitch to play a match. This is weeks of planning flights, accommodation, getting commitments from people -

and then arriving in a foreign city where you probably don't speak the language. In some cases, driving 10 hours.

This travel doesn't come cheap. This is all paid for out of the players own pocket. The reward? We get to play the game we love,

we start and cememt friendships and relationships. This is networking on a whole new level.

This is not one 70 minute game. This is sometimes up to 5 or 6 25-minute games. Stop - start.

Think about it. The muscle fatigue, the multiple hits, the stretching - then go and do it all again. But that's worth it.

Why? Because after it, you don't disappear home or off with your own team. You go to your hostel, get cleaned up and go for dinner -

with all the other teams and have a laugh with the lad who sent you into the middle of next week with a shoulder.

Everyone wants to win, but, not to sound cliche, the only winner is Gaelic Games, and the Irish culture. we are ambassadors for

our country, our counties, our parishes. We promote the games in our communities. We get local people involved. They know how to get more

people involved, know how to access local sports fields and facilities. There's no point in remaining a closed exclusive group. What are we afraid of?

That someone might beat us at our own game??

If they do, they earn the right. They've learned the skills and accept the physicality of the sport. They love it just as much as an Irish

person. As we look forward to the Vienna tournament there are many things to be pleased about in European GAA, the development and establishment

of multiple new clubs, the integration of our games into a broader society outside of Ireland. A club goes beyond what happens on the training field.

It's a network of people who support, encourage and develop with each others help. With the many Irish people leaving Irelands shores, some may look for

that GAA fix, others may need that feeling of home, and the familiar "howya". Everything helps. Don't underestimate what impact you have.

European PRO- Brian Clerkin

European PRO- Brian Clerkin | Pan European Build Up Round 2 Vienna. Austria | Scoop.it

Hello and Welcome to the Fifth European GAA newsletter in my fifth month as European GAA PRO. I will be running a series profiling the European County Board members and how do they work for you?

Who am I and What do i do?

I am a teacher in an International School in Switzerland and I am also a founder member and goalkeeper for the Saint Gallen Bears GAA team founded in 2010. I have been involved in GAA in Europe since March 2008 and hope to continue long into the future. I am the Secretary of the Saint Gallen Bears, the Results and Standings Officer for the CCC of European GAA and also the PRO (Public Relations Officer) for the European County Board. I try my best to keep up with the news, events, photos, videos, results, activities, stories, Facebook accounts of clubs, websites, search engine activities to hopefully get an overall impression of GAA in Europe. I update the European GAA Facebook as often as news comes through, with the help of Gearoid O'Sullivan European Assistant Treasurer we also keep the website up to date with important items. I try to keep an audio podcast week by week and especially for important events or the build up of a few news items.

How can you keep up with European GAA?

"Like" us on Facebook (European County Board), follow us on Twitter (@europeagaa), Website (www.europegaa.eu) and www.gaelicsportscast.com all of these sources are regularly updated with news, events, photos, media, links etc.

Drop me a line at pro.europe@gaa.eu with photos, stories, videos, results etc and I will do my best to try and help get it recognised. If you give me your email address I can keep you in the loop as regards all newsletters, ezines, special offers, podcasts etc.

What would I like to see from you?

Assist me in any way that you can from being proactive in photos, stories, results, news, events, videos etc and then I would love for you to be helpful when it comes to spreading the word getting the message out there in anyway you can email, facebook, word of mouth, skype etc. We always need more help, more promotion and more recongition anyway in which you could increase our reach would be super. A healthy presence in Ireland gives us members who may never have known about us, a healthy presence in Europe gives us access to new members, sponsors, volunteers etc.

My Vision?

I can see a day when GAA in Europe has over 150 clubs in over 30 countries with more ladies, men and children playing than ever before. I see the percentage of hurlers and camogs being higher in Europe than in Ireland. I see multi-lingual, multi-ethnic and multi-national teams that do not need Irish players to ingrain themselves into their local societies because they will be the locals.

Watch out for the next Ezine " European GAA Charity Contributors" a wonderful recognition for all our members out there who go the extra mile and make the extra sacrifices, donating money and time to very worthwhile and fantastic projects.

Any suggestions, contributions, comments or news

Just let me know

Brian Clerkin European GAA PRO.

European GAA breaks new ground in Italy

European GAA breaks new ground in Italy | Pan European Build Up Round 2 Vienna. Austria | Scoop.it

Rovigo, Italy. Raffaello Franco organises the first ever GAA training in Italy with Diarmaid Gallagher (Donegal) now living in Verona and thus a club is born, Italy has its first ever GAA club Rovigo Ascona GAA club. They set up trainings with friends and rivals in Padova then we have Padova Gaelic Football club organised by the Duca brothers. Both teams together promote the game excellently through local and national media and even went down to Puglia to give a demonstration and explanation of the games at an Irish Cultural Festival. The clubs have had representation in Croke Park and in Ireland countless times in the last year but Chiara Sandona one of their female players has already represented Europe at the Na Fianna Ladies 7's tournament.

http://www.ascaro.it/wp/?cat=121. The clubs have met up many times to train and build links together and they will compete in the ADIGE GAELIC CUP on Saturday, October 27 at 3:30pm at Campo Sportivo Buso Calcio - Laterale di Via Ippolito Nievo - Buso di Rovigo. This will be the first competitive match of Gaelic Football in Italy.

Following on from this a new team has also started up in Rome, which is fantastic news for Italian GAA. The team is being organised through Chris Taggart and the Scholars Lounge Irish Pub close to the Colisseum a fantastic backdrop for the foundation of a GAA club. I know their numbers are increasing for training week after week and they have a growing presence in the capital. We also have a few GAA contacts in Fidenza, Verona and Treviso so the future is bright for Italian GAA and hopefully we can build on the great work being done at all levels by these three great clubs. They can all be found on Facebook by searching for Rome Gaelic Football, Rovigo Gaelic Football and Padova Gaelic Football.

Italy is no stranger to the GAA with the Martin Donnelly sponsored 2003 Hurling Railway Cup Final being played in the Giulio Onesti sports complex where a crowd of 1000 nshowed up to watch this "stange" irish game. Its a lot different now.
