Slaughter and satire: Understanding what Charlie Hebdo really stood for

Slaughter and satire: Understanding what Charlie Hebdo really stood for | Outbreaks of Futurity | Scoop.it

We will hear the name of Charlie Hebdo invoked to stir up anti-immigrant passions throughout the West, to argue in favor of militarized police and a secret national-security state and endless war in the Middle East. (This event was pretty much manna from heaven for the Halloween coalition of Muslim-haters, from the talking heads of Fox News to Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris to right-wing French nationalist Marine Le Pen.) On the other side, we will also hear Charlie invoked by “moderate” and “responsible” people of Barber’s ilk, to suggest that freedom of expression should only go so far and no further, and that if we want a stable and orderly world certain topics must be left alone. We will hear the name of Charlie Hebdo invoked to stir up anti-immigrant passions throughout the West, to argue in favor of militarized police and a secret national-security state and endless war in the Middle East. Overwhelmed. That's how I feel when I zoom into this new panorama of the Andromeda galaxy. Yesterday it was the mind-blowing new photo of the Pillars of Creation. Today is this view of Andromeda with over 100 million stars in it. Yes, that is not noise. Each of those dots is a star!

New, privatized African city heralds climate apartheid

New, privatized African city heralds climate apartheid | Outbreaks of Futurity | Scoop.it
Nigeria's Eko Atlantic augurs how the super-rich will exploit the crisis of climate change to increase inequality and seal themselves off from its impacts
Artur Coelho's insight:

"Eko Atlantic is where you can begin to see a possible future – a vision of privatized green enclaves for the ultra rich ringed by slums lacking water or electricity, in which a surplus population scramble for depleting resources and shelter to fend off the coming floods and storms. Protected by guards, guns, and an insurmountable gully – real estate prices – the rich will shield themselves from the rising tides of poverty and a sea that is literally rising. A world in which the rich and powerful exploit the global ecological crisis to widen and entrench already extreme inequalities and seal themselves off from its impacts – this is climate apartheid."

Why China Is Building The World's Largest "Coast Guard" Cutter

Why China Is Building The World's Largest "Coast Guard" Cutter | Outbreaks of Futurity | Scoop.it
The idea of a Coast Guard is one that has blurred in recent decades, with US Coast Guard vessels serving as far away from home as the Persian Gulf on a regular basis. Still, the Chinese Coast Guard's upcoming 10,000 plus ton super high-endurance cutters are clearly another sign of the country's extra-territorial ambitions.

New Years Resolution: battle against inequality and financialization. | Outbreaks of Futurity | Scoop.it
The global financial crisis that began in 2008, and whose remnants are still felt strongly in countries facing full blown economic crises, was caused by two key factors. First: rising inequality, especially in the US, which caused those people with falling living standards to take out massive levels of debt, beyond what their income levels could later repay. Second: by a de-regulated financial sector which outstripped industrial

Oh sure, every year has its horrors and there are far worse annums behind us (the Crusades, anyone?), but 2014 proved to be a year in which long-festering social, environmental, and political problems were exposed in ways we have not seen in a very long time.
