Our Tour in America and Canada: Including A Visit to the St Louis Exposition 1904

Our Tour in America and Canada: Including A Visit to the St Louis Exposition 1904  | ‘Our Tour in America & Canada – Including a visit to the 1904 St Louis Exposition’ | Scoop.it
First written in 1904, the main narrative and text of this incredibly fascinating and rare memoir account - "travel story" - is by Marie E Duncumb. And like something straight out of a fiction novel; this one hundred and ten year gem had been hidden away in a chest in the attic of an old country house in Essex, England, and until it recently rediscovered in 2008. This “First Edition” is exactly that for it has never been published anywhere in the world before and you can count yourself among the very first privileged readers to ever set eyes on Marie’s delightful first-hand accounts and experiences of her travelling from London, England, via Kings Cross Railway Station to Liverpool Docks - the boarding of the S.S. Celtic and sailing onto New York. The ship was then the world’s largest ship afloat and owned by the White Star Line and years prior to the tragic sinking of the S.S. Titanic. Marie notes: “We were much later than we expected to be getting to Sandy Hook, the cause being that we had to steam a good many miles further south than we otherwise should have done to avoid the icebergs.”
Marie Duncumb's insight:

We are almost there, the audio version should be ready in June 2014.

Marie Duncumb's insight:

The Canadian, whatever his original nationality, glories in the fact the he is British. He will say to you: “I have never seen old England, and my father is French, but I am British, and I mean to see the old home on the other side before I die”; and that; “...the sun never sets on the British flag”, is their favourite expression. Of course, a great number of the population are pure English and very proud they are of it, too; and I must say it is becoming, not an overbearing, pride. Wherever I have been, either in America or Canada, even on our own Continent, the English rank first. The greatest courtesy and attention is always shown to the English, and in some instances I should like to see a littler greater appreciation of the foreigners’ kindness from my fellow countrymen and women.

I have been asked to give my impressions of America and its people.   To me America appears a very busy nation, following closely in the footsteps on the Old Country, there is essentially no room for the idler or laggard, while there is tons of room and to spare for the busy, clever, energetic worker of both sexes.  Nowhere did I see “Uncle Sam” of the story-book fame. Probably he does exist in some out-of-the-way village, but it is more than probable that he like “John Bull,” is more an allegorical being than a living reality. My biggest and most lasting impression of the people was the way they treat the coloured race. Not once did I see any distinction made between black and white and they are most particular in calling them (so we had to be) the coloured people, not black. All the real Americans and Canadians we came in contact with were courteous, kind, and obliging, and all seemed to enjoy our company very much.
