In his commercial work Michael's talents are seen through the land whether in posters, magazines, or even on national postage stamps.

A sample of his sketches and a great interview can be found mid-way through this issue of Guerilla

Evelyn Duberry Glass Beads

Evelyn Duberry Glass Beads | Ottawa Artists | Scoop.it

I like to play with fire and glass… and think out loud.I’ve adored glass for as long as I can remember. When I was very little, I loved holding my marble sets up to the sky and marveling as the colours sparkled and blended in the sunlight. I would roll them in my hands revelling in the smoothness, varying shades and satisfying <clink> as they knocked together.

Karl Goertzen

Karl Goertzen | Ottawa Artists | Scoop.it

A vibrant contemporary art gallery located in the busy By-Ward After experiencing crippling suicidal thoughts and delusions since the age of 16 I was finally diagnosed many years later with the rare Schizo-Affective Disorder (a combination of Bipolar 1 and Schizophrenia) . My paintings provide the viewer a window to the landscape of my mental illness traveling from the sometimes hopeful to the absolutely terrifying and intensely crushing ideas of suicide.

My works are vivid in color to express the powerful strength of the delusions and suicidal ideation. Painting is also the one outlet where I feel in control of my thoughts. I am attempting to break down the walls of my disorder and the stigma that is still so often attached to people suffering from disorders like my own. I hope that by exposing my work to a much larger audience that others suffering from mental illness will take comfort in my paintings.

Karl's work is available through La Petite Mort Gallery.

Andrew Fay

Andrew Fay | Ottawa Artists | Scoop.it

Andrew Fay was raised and educated in Ottawa and received his training at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.

His work continues to focus on figurative subject matter. The paintings centre on the human image, examining a gamut of physical and emotional drives. The figures are often nude, not to portray excessive sexuality but rather to convey the essence of the human spirit. The nudity in his work also reflects his appreciation and affection of the nude as found in the great masterpieces throughout art history. The narrative of his paintings is often intentionally ambiguous. He creates a surreal atmosphere which invites the viewer to interact with the work on their own terms, with minimal direction.

He has participated in numerous exhibitions, most notably at the Karsh-Masson Gallery, the Ottawa Art Gallery, and the Ottawa School of Art Gallery. Andrew’s paintings can be found in important civic and private collections in Ottawa, and his work is currently on view at the La Petite Mort Gallery.

Angelina McCormick Photographs

Angelina McCormick Photographs | Ottawa Artists | Scoop.it

Compelled to do more than just make a statement - the attraction of photography for Angelina came from a desire to communicate a concept, and to connect with people on multiple levels.
Whether photographing a commissioned portrait, fine art still life, or an editorial piece - Angelina's photographic vision is clear. From the initial concept, through to the finished work of art, her polished style is a blend of old masters darkroom techniques in which she transfers into her high end digital production.
Angelina's style is expressive, intense and even provocative at times because ultimately - she coexists in her photographs..

Alison Smith-Welsh

Alison Smith-Welsh | Ottawa Artists | Scoop.it

Alison Smith-Welsh is an Ottawa artist who fabricates her astonishing assemblages by reusing and reinventing uses for discarded materials which she obsessively collects. Alison Smith-Welsh will first draw you in with whimsy, then impress and entertain you with her astonishing mechanical skill, her gimlet eye and a sense of humour that is at once full of irony, wit and intelligence. Smith-Welsh creates modern, even futuristic sculptures out of materials and items that the viewer will find familiar and nostalgic, then torques them with a twist that is appealing, amusing and thought-provoking. This cutting-edge Canadian artist has an established following through shows at Cube Gallery, Gallery 101, Galerie Montcalm and the Ottawa School of Art.

Peter Shmelzer

Peter Shmelzer | Ottawa Artists | Scoop.it

I see visual art as a method of measuring and reflecting the world and our place in it. Like the written or spoken word, it is a system for elucidating that which evades our immediate understanding. There is a contemporary compulsion to impose trends and to forecast even the most ephemeral and unpredictable of things through the endless collection of data. Though this has yielded great social/scientific/economic fruit, it may be ill-suited to deal with the absurdity of human interaction. Images that work entirely outside the world of reason may be better-suited to telling the story of how we act and interact.

Gallery and Slideshow - Orange Art Gallery Ottawa

Gallery and Slideshow - Orange Art Gallery Ottawa | Ottawa Artists | Scoop.it

David Cation was born in Orangeville Ontario in 1965. David is a self taught artist, known for large boldly coloured figurative paintings. His subjects depict portraits of lovers, dancers, boxers, day-glow skeletons and angels. David's understanding of the human being in its rawest format brings strong emotion to anyone looking onward. Uncomfortable subjects for some, the honest struggle of humanity is no doubt felt when experiencing David's paintings. David's paintings have been widely exhibited and collected in museums and galleries in Canada the United States and Europe. In 2003 he was the only Canadian represented in the exhibit SKULLS, alongside works by Andy Warhol and Georgia O'keefe. Recently he was exhibited in the show of outsider artists entitled Touched by Fire at the Royal Ontario Museum. David continues to paint out of his Ottawa studio.

Orange Art Gallery is a new contemporary studio and gallery located in the centre of the Arts district at the Parkdale Market area of Hintonburg just north of Wellington St. West in Ottawa, Ontario.

Meaghan Haughian

Meaghan Haughian | Ottawa Artists | Scoop.it
My work is an act of storytelling that explores the dualities of life. I seek to capture the experiences and emotions that we share collectively as human beings but often experience in isolation. I create scenes and situations of architecturally and emotionally fragmented interiors. Like a diary entry, each piece questions and reflects, recounting the moments that form personal history and identity.

My practice results primarily in mixed media drawings on paper, though recently found materials such as wooden drawers have been included in, or formed the structure of, my work. I use paper as my surface for its simultaneous strength and fragility and for its ability to preserve, remembering marks even after they have been erased or painted over. Working with various wet and dry materials, including collage elements, I repeatedly add and remove information. These layers of fact and fiction are built up slowly and intuitively, resulting in worlds to explore and inhabit.

The majority of my pieces are small in scale to reflect their intimate subject matter: tales of fiction that are based in lived experience. These narratives are both subtle and direct, merging personal history with collective human experience in a complex and honest way. They explore serious subject matter with sincerity, humour and moments of irony. An amalgamation of disparate imagery, they merge love and loss, hope and despair, growth and decay, always willing to whisper their dreams and fears to those who take a step closer
