Afghan women fight back against harassment - Opinion - Al Jazeera English

Afghan women fight back against harassment - Opinion - Al Jazeera English | OSJ Prayers 7.8.11 | Scoop.it
On Thursday, women in Afghanistan--the most dangerous country in the world for females--fought back against sexual harassment by the holding the first demonstration of its kind in Kabul. Women marched in protest against street harassment--being insulted, abused, groped and followed by men simply for leaving the house. Give thanks for this small but significant act calling for progress towards improved treatment of women (MDG 3). Pray that the demonstration may spark dialogue about the underlying values that cause street harassment. May the male perpetrators rather than the female victims be held responsible for these crimes.

ASIA: Indigenous people gain greater forest rights

ASIA: Indigenous people gain greater forest rights | OSJ Prayers 7.8.11 | Scoop.it
Give thanks to God that countries across Asia are making strides in reducing deforestation (MDG 7). The countries that been the most successful in expanding forests are those that have granted greater rights to local communities and indigenous peoples over the land and natural resources where they live. Thousands of villages across Asia are on land owned by the state and without any legal right to nearby forest resources, which reduces incentives for sustainable practices all around. Give thanks for this growing trend to empower local and indigenous communities by legally recognizing their rights and abilities to sustainably manage surrounding forests. Pray also that our own actions and lifestyles may better reflect God’s calling to be earth-keepers and caretakers of His creation.
