Campaign uses Apple Store opening queue clip to encourage organ donor registration | Organ Donation & Transplant Matters Resources | Scoop.it

A Belgian campaign group used the queue for the recent opening of the Apple Store in Brussels to create a clever video encouraging people to register as organ donors. People on the waiting list for organ transplantation switched places with people waiting for the latest Apple gadgets in exchange for a commitment to register as an organ donor.

The video can be accessed via the landing page which is accessed via clicking on the banner headline.

Why is organ & tissue donation taboo for Kenyans?

Why is organ & tissue donation taboo for Kenyans? | Organ Donation & Transplant Matters Resources | Scoop.it

It appears that deeply engrained religious and cultural beliefs prevent people in Kenya from donating both organs and tissues but some doctors are trying to change attitudes, writes Anne Soy.

There is an urgent need for corneas that can then be used to correct the vision of patients affected by disorders of the cornea including keratoconus. Although corneas are imported into Kenya, the cost is prohibitive for many patients as well as the health system. Hence there is a real need to improve the rates of tissue donation along with the rates of organ donation in Kenya so that more patients can benefit.

Attempts are being made to educate people in the community with some of the medical professionals now raising awareness of the importance of organ and tissue donation in order to assist with leading the efforts to achieve much needed change in Kenya.

Postive messages which are appealling to individuals are more likely to work versus messages outlining the harsh realities of potential transplant recipients.

Examples of the questions that were asked for this research are outlined in the following article-

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2528726/Selfish-ploy-attract-100-000-new-organ-donors-year.html

An update of the results of this research were published online in March 2014-

Deborah Verran's insight:
