Pierre Omidyar

Born in Paris, then moved to US when he was 6. Created eBay in one weekend in 1995 while home from Tufts University, when he was 28, orignally named, "Auction Web." He changed it to eBay after "echobay" was already registered. eBay was first designed to help his fiance trade "Pez" dispensers. He was employeed by Apple company, making the Macintosh software. First item sold was a broken lazer pointer, not a Pez. In the first month over 2 million items were sold and traded. He let his company go public in 1998.

eBay uses "mission fish" which allows the seller to donate a certain portion of their proceeds to ta charity of their choice. As of 2010 over $154 million has been raises for some US nonprofits by means of eBay Giving Works organization. eBay recently made plans to build a new builiding that is ecofriendly. The building will run on renewable energy sources ranging from the sun to local water. Also, over 75% of the building materials were recycled.

eBay is ranked 269, while previously ranked 267. The CEO is now John J. Donahoe, while Omidyar was the previous CEO. As of 2008 the net worth was $4.45 billion for Omidyar. Omidyar is worth over $6.7 billion and the 141st richest person in the world and 50th in the US. He is also the second richest person of Iranian descent. eBay made over $9 million dollars in revenue last year.

eBay has recently restricted payment options, changed seller feedback, and promoted fixed-price items (like what amazon offers).

amazon now requires pre-approval for sellers looking into going in certain product categories.

 

When the recession hit in 2008 eBay revenue fell by over 31% from the previous year.

amazon on the other hand, increases revenue over 18% in 2008.

eBay planned on increasing the revenue by adding skype and PayPal.

amazon is on the upswing because of the fall of Circuit City and the fact that the fixed pricing was lowered.

 

amazon also has the reputation of having the polished look that many online shoppers wanted.

Born on January 13, 1964 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Enrolled in Princeton University to major in computer science and electrical engineering. Created Amazon in 1994 to sell books becasue of the rapidly growing book market. He started Amazon with only $180 and 3 friends, within 30 days books were sold to all 50 states and 45 different countries with no press. Him and his wife plan to donate and create many different philanthropic organizations.

eBay charges a listing fee while Amazon does not. eBay also makes the seller pay the minimum amount if the product doesn't sell. Amazon dominates in the fixed-price sector in the online trading empire. eBay is more of an online auction while Amazon buyers know what they want and what to pay for it. eBay allows the buyers to use PayPal while Amazon does not. The final sell go through Amazon while it goes straight to the buyer and seller on eBay. eBay only offers products already made, where amazon creates their own inventions (kindle/kindle fire). Amazon's main competitors were Barnes and Nobles and Borders, because of internet hype, both businesses have taken a dramatic plunge.

amazon creates different "channels" for customers to donate money to certain orginaztions or causes. In 2004, Amazon's "Presidential Candidates" allowed customers to donate $5 to $200 to the campaigns. amazon also donates to the Red Cross. amazson also donated over $18.7 million to US between 2001-2005. amazon also prides themselves on being ecofriendly from packaging to sustainable buildings.

As 2011 Amazon was ranked 78 as a previous 100. Jeff Bezos is still the CEO and his net worth is over $18 billion. Amazon made a revenue total of $34 million in 2011. Amazon is also ranked #1 in Internet Services and Retailing. Amazon is "killing" the competitors by competing in many different areas, from the iPad "killer" to channeling to Netflix users. Amazon is known for the ability to change and compete with modern markets.
