10 most common cons

Bodene Johns's insight:

Located at the end of the list, this is a simple article expressing the numerous strategies of a scammer. Sadly this source doesn’t relate very much to my topic, it only provides a segment on online false identities, the other segments focus on other various ways a scammer can affect their victim. It’s not very detailed but does include limited ways to acknowledge someone who is trying to manipulate someone online.

Man scouting sex partner on facebook lands in police net

Breaking News from Nepal, News in Nepal: Fast, Full & Factual News from Nepal in English
Bodene Johns's insight:

Reflecting on the story of a man who poses as a young female, this article illustrates the steps that the legal system select when dealing with the crime fraud. The male was caught allegedly fishing for female sex partners using fake Facebook account from Naxal area of Kathmandu. I believe this text wouldn’t be very relevant due to its location, but it does show how common this criminal act is all over the world.

Bodene Johns's insight:

Illustrating not only the risk of coming into contact with false identities online, this video also exhibits the risk of publishing your own information. Coming to number 16, this source is a very interesting source of information. Sadly it doesn’t focus on my issue. Nonetheless the simplicity of taking ones online identity can be quite alarming to an audience and should be viewed by anyone interested in the topic.

Bodene Johns's insight:

Another perspective of the issue at hand is this promotional video of a new online dating network called ‘Audrey’. I believe this new network exhibits exactly the issue of fake accounts on social networks. The creators attempt to link numerous accounts to the one on their site in order to prevent any false identities. Showing this clip to someone interested in this issue would appreciate this new social network and what they’re attempting to do.

Bodene Johns's insight:

This clip presents the typical layout of a news report, exposing the shocking news of an Australian women murdered in a foreign country due to an apparent online relationship, gone wrong. It follows by depicting other victims of fake identities, but what is important in this source is the amount of money that was transferred to these ‘catfishes’. How to Invent a Person Online

How to Invent a Person Online | Online Identity | Scoop.it
Is it possible to be truly anonymous in the digital world?
Bodene Johns's insight:

This article presents a different perspective of the issue. It doesn’t outline personal experiences, or the tragedies that lie beneath speaking to strangers online, instead it illustrates how easy it is to create a fake identity. Written by Curtis Wallen, he undergoes the experience of creating a fake identity and remaining anonymous. The article is very interesting to read as he tallies up the numerous fake proof of identity sources he created. It opens the audience’s eyes to how simple it is, how available the material is and produces another side to the story.

Bodene Johns's insight:

As the hospitality businesses are now ranked, analysed, and compared, not by industry professionals, but by the very people for whom the service is intended — the customer. This has forged a new relationship between buyer and seller. This new relationship is now open for manipulation by fake identities. This article may not focus so much on the issues of online identities manipulating ones emotions, but more so how they can manipulate others opinions of businesses and the effects it can have.

You See Love, They See Gold: Yet Another Online Dating Scam

You See Love, They See Gold: Yet Another Online Dating Scam | Online Identity | Scoop.it
Yesterday we looked at the growing phenomenon of online dating scams that are cheating unsuspecting and vulnerable people out of millions of dollars across the globe. While we noted that online dating’s move to the mainstream is likely the main cause in the growing number of scams out there, another long-term trend is also partly …
Bodene Johns's insight:

An article like this exposes the real dangers of those who create a fake online identity. Exposing a woman from England who was duped by a man she met through an online dating service. Assisting his friend in importing valuable legally into the country, the scam involved the woman paying thousands in fake tax bills and custom fees. I felt like this article would shock an audience who weren’t aware of how extreme this issue is by the copious amount of money she lost.

Bodene Johns's insight:

I found this source very interesting due to the way it is presented.  Crosscutting from famous presenters along with normal people, this video exhibits multiple stories of fake online relationships that have been exposed. If someone interested in this subject watched this clip they would be confronted by a copious amount of information on the matter at hand, they isn’t a chronological order of clips yet it’s this technique that displays how common the issue is.

Fake social media ID duped security-aware IT guys

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2059940/fake-social-media-id-duped-securityaware-it-guys.html

Bodene Johns's insight:

This article presents an experiment which were performed by security experts.  They pretended to represent a smart, attractive young woman to penetrate the defences of a U.S. government agency with a high level of cybersecurity awareness, as part of an exercise that shows how effective social engineering attacks can be, even against technically sophisticated organizations. Even though this doesn’t relate to the attacks on a dating network it provides an accurate measure on how easily it is to fall in the trap of a false online identity.

Bodene Johns's insight:

Another YouTube blog presenting ones opinion on the issue of fake online identities. The clip isn’t very interesting as we watch a few pictures flash on the screen with the creator’s voice narrating the story. It guides the audience into realising the effortless attempt in creating a fake account. Unfortunately this YouTube video isn’t interesting nor is it credible for an audience to view.

Bodene Johns's insight:

This clip is only a very short screen of an infamous Doctor Phil program. The program is focusing on a woman who refuses to believe she has fallen for someone using a false identity online, in order to retrieve goods from her. This resource would be great for an audience to relate to, though it is a Doctor Phil program and cannot be credible. The program is a profitable television program however does produce very important facts on deciphering whether someone online is truthful or not.

Bodene Johns's insight:

A news report which focuses on the issue of online identity against children. Unfortunately it doesn’t stick to my topic of discussion however it does report on strategies that can prevent children getting tangled up in cybercrimes, such an online identity. I ranked it lower on my list due to its relevance but I believe the importance is quite high and should be shown to any carer of a child who is online.

Bodene Johns's insight:

What I found interesting when curating a list for online identity is the work produced by fellow university students on the matter. This clip is a documentary raising questions onto how easy it is to have a false online identity. The student created 5 different people and exposes how believable they looked. The technique of not using any spoken words adds a huge effect to the text, the music is suspenseful and grabs the audience. However I did place it half way down my lost due to its credibility, yes it is first hand experiences but it was created by a university student that can’t prove their authority

How to tell if someone is real

Bodene Johns's insight:

I like the medium used to expose the issues of false identities. A YouTube clip, with a close up of a unique looking person and their own techniques of deciphering a false online profile. It presents a real life conversation. There isn’t any fancy editing, just a real person, speaking about a real issue. I believe it would connect to anyone going through the concern or for those who may be a little anxious when speaking to people online.

Women 'duped in dating site fraud'

Women 'duped in dating site fraud' | Online Identity | Scoop.it
Women duped by fake profiles on the Match.com dating website were conned into handing over nearly a quarter of a million pounds, a court hears.
Bodene Johns's insight:

Similar to the text above, this reflects how multiple people from all parts of the world were easily scammed by a fake identity. Yet in this article examples of text messages from the scammers were shown. I believe this would perhaps alarm those who are chatting online now to someone they think they know, realising how easy it is to be manipulated. Especially by someone you have feelings for.

Bodene Johns's insight:

I don’t appreciate the typical layout of the documentary, however the information presented is exactly what I am trying to expose through my list. The program goes through a typical series of events that someone being ‘catfished’ would experience, the information is clear and relatable. The documentary sets up a typical profile and follows through with the scamming that is about to occur. Shadowing their moves an audience can better understand the dangers of fake online identities.

Love-Seekers Beware: Online Dating Fraud Rose 150% Last Year

Bodene Johns's insight:

This source pin points exactly what I am trying to convey. It also includes statistics from a reliable source which presents a clearer understanding to those interested in online identity issues.  The article is similar to a published blog that asks for others stories via a comment box. I believe this is a small aspect of the text however it highlights the reality of the issue. Another element that I favour is the language of the text, communicated by a colloquial and relaxed conversational tone that offers the audience a personal experience into the matter.
