It's very important to make the right mix of training, mentoring, coaching, etc. for your staff... and, of course, to be able to do that, it's great if you are very precisely know which one is for which to develop... for me, mentoring and coaching is separated by the actual usage of your knowledge in the process... the mentor is using his/her actual knowledge in the process (he was chosen exactly for that), while the coach (at least lots of variation of it) is taking care to let the client use his/her knowledge (one of my favorite, the soloution focused approach enumerates among its principles the "usefulness of the not-knowing"...)...
