Gulf oil spill affects shrimp business, from boat to table | Oil Spills and their effect on shrimp | Scoop.it
While the BP oil spill wreaks environmental havoc in the Gulf, one ripple effect of the disaster is being seen in seafood markets throughout MetroWest. Many local seafood sellers are worried about rising prices as the oil leak continues to spread, threatening fisheries and seafood harvesting areas.
Jillian Endl's insight:

This article is about the sellers of shrimp and how they have become worried with the raised prices of shrimp. The shrimpers talk about the difficult times that they are facing with the raised prices and what they are going to have to do in order to not have such high prices.

This article will be used to help me determine what the fisherman will do in response to the high shrimp prices.

Empty nets in Louisiana three years after the spill

Empty nets in Louisiana three years after the spill | Oil Spills and their effect on shrimp | Scoop.it
In the three years since the Gulf oil disaster, studies show the catch is safe. But that's no consolation to the fishermen along Louisiana's hard-hit bayou.
Jillian Endl's insight:

This article will help me touch on the effects the oil spill had on fisherman's numbers in production. It will also work to explain consequences the fisherman have faced even years after the big oil spill.

In this article, it discusses how fisherman have witnessed decreasing numbers after the large oil spill. It talks about how even after a few years, the waters are still having issues with staying full of seafood for production.

Gulf oil spill's effects still has seafood industry nervous

Gulf oil spill's effects still has seafood industry nervous | Oil Spills and their effect on shrimp | Scoop.it
Three years after the Deepwater Horizon disaster, the Gulf of Mexico seafood industry is still holding its breath and expecting the worst. After all, sick fish are still turning up off Louisiana. Scientists are still probing potential problems with crabs and shrimp.
Jillian Endl's insight:

This article depicts the losses of much of the food industry. It explains what happened and the consequences the industry is still facing in regards to the oil spills that occurred. It talks about the long term effects the oil spills had on the fish industry.

I will be using this article to help better explain the importance of our purpose in the food industry. Without our help, the amounts of sick fish in the oceans could continue to increase rather than decrease.

Oil spill imperils Gulf shrimp industry

Oil spill imperils Gulf shrimp industry | Oil Spills and their effect on shrimp | Scoop.it
WASHINGTON -- Gulf of Mexico shrimp, famous for their sweet taste and firm texture, have survived a domestic market flooded by imports and a near-death experience after Hurricane Katrina. But the Gulf oil spill -- arriving just as the harvesting season was about to begin in mid-May -- has shut down key fishing waters and is proving even more worrisome to shrimpers, processers and restaurants as they face what could be a years long, if not permanent, loss of market share to farm-raised shrimp from Southeast Asia. Gulf shrimp caught off the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida is 10 percent of the U.S. market. Now, there's an overriding concern that the public will shun the shrimp that has the taint of the oil spill. "We were just on the rebound from Hurricane Katrina,"
Jillian Endl's insight:

This article talks about how shrimp farmers and processors are having problems producing shrimp after this oil spill. It also touches on how they are not only trying to recover from Hurricane Katrina, but now the oil spill has impacted them tremendously as well.

I am going to use this article to help discuss in greater detail the impact the oil spill has had on shrimpers and the consumers.

In this article, I learned about the effects the oil spill had on shrimp and other fish. It explains that the shrimp and other fish are starting to become mutated and deformed by the chemicals from the oil spill. It also tells what scientists have found on the fish that is clearly abnormal. (sores and lesions)

I will be using this piece to show the consequences the fish have faced in regards to the BP spill. Also, to touch on what permanent damage scientists have seen in the fish.

Fishing industry still reeling from effects of 2010 BP oil spill

Fishing industry still reeling from effects of 2010 BP oil spill | Oil Spills and their effect on shrimp | Scoop.it
LAFITTE, la. — Gloom infects the hard-working shrimp and crab docks of this gritty fishing town as the second full year of fishing since BP's catastrophic oil spill kicks into high
Jillian Endl's insight:

This article describes how fisherman at the docks are continuing to lose much of their shrimp production. It explains that even after the BP oil spill, they are still facing weakening numbers in their production of shrimp. The fisherman numbers are still at a going rate, but the price of the shrimp has increased drastically due to lack in the amount of fish.

I am going to use this article for my paper to help explain that even though the BP oil spill is over, the fisherman and consumers are continuing to face issues with production of shrimp. This article will help me to explain that the importance of safer ocean waters is important if we want to continue to production of shrimp and many other delicacies we love so much.
