Maddi Cullen's insight:

Research has shown that fatigue can lead to inattentiveness and, ultimately, mistakes. After switching to daylight savings time, reports have shown that on the Monday, there was an increase of 5.7% of on the job injuries. I find this worrying as it is not only at work where injuries can occur from the switch to daylight savings. While driving to work, if they are suffering from lack of sleep they could quite easily fall asleep behind the wheel.

Maddi Cullen's insight:

December of 2013, a builder suffered life changing injuries after falling approximately 3m off a scaffolding guardrail. This potentially life threatening accident was caused by a fellow worker loosening the scaffolding system in order to resolve a problem he had encountered. Construction workers must stop and think before putting themselves and other colleagues at risk by altering scaffolding on building sites.

Maddi Cullen's insight:

The major role in occupational health and safety is the identification of the causation of accidents in a workplace. Human error is usually found to be the leading cause of workplace accidents whether it be international or unintentional. I find this article particularly interesting as it gives an insight on solutions and policies that are aimed directly at influencing the human behaviour at a workplace. It is poor behaviour which is the dominating cause of human error accidents.

Maddi Cullen's insight:

It is essential that employers take care of the health and safety of their employees through meeting the regulations set by the occupational health and safety legislation. Failing to ensure that construction workers used a fall protection system is a violation to the occupational health and safety legislation. This was a risk taken by the employer of the Saskatoon worksite which possessed a great threat to their employees health and safety.

Maddi Cullen's insight:

A West Yorkshire firm neglected safety for staff through ignoring the health and safety regulations. The company did not comply with their statutory duties for a period of several years despite being aware of the risks associated with the use of vibrating hand tools. Many workers developed the debilitating hand arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) which is caused through the repeated use of hand held power tools. This is not acceptable and the the firm should have acted appropriately when they first got a report of the injury evolving in the workplace.

Maddi Cullen's insight:

Drink driving is a dangerous threat to everyone involved. Driving is a very complex activity which requires correct decision making, total concentration, good co-ordination and rapid reflexes. If someone is under the influence of alcohol, their body becomes disorientated and they are unable to fulfil these requirements which is a hazard to other road users. I found an interesting fact that alcohol and drug driving is the number one contributor as a factor in approximately 30% of fatal crashes in Queensland.

JoLee Sudsbury's comment, December 5, 2012 5:37 PM
This is unfortunate that this had to happen, for both parties involved. I have heard similar stories before of people who have been sober for years and all of a sudden relapse, and it being the last time because it ends up killing them. In this case it did not kill her but she was obviously extremely intoxicated to have kept driving for over two miles. This is something I would like to learn about addictions, is why people who have appeared to "beat" their addictions, though they can never fully be beaten, end up relapsing so fast with no signs of risk, and for it to not just be a little use, but an alarming amount.
