Musicians four times more likely to suffer hearing loss - Classical ...

A new study, published in the online journal Occupational & Environmental Medicine, has found that professional musicians are four times more likely to develop noise-related hearing loss than non-musicians.
Deborah Lacey's insight:

After many years of practicing the drums, hearing loss is an issue that could affect Bianca for the rest of her life. Acoustic drums are naturally hit harder to sound great and to be heard by many. While electric drums are not as loud due to having a volume control, they also have to potential to cause hearing loss as headphones are able to be connected so only the player is able to hear them

Bianca: Drummer

Bianca: Drummer | OCHS Quest 1, 2 & 3 | Scoop.it

I would like to introduce Bianca, she thoroughly enjoys banging out a beat on her drum kit. She plays on an acoustic kit as well as an electric kit. Her parents love nothing more then to hear her giving the skins a work out. One of the biggest concerns of playing the drums is how loud they can be, and Bianca could play them for a couple hours at a time, making it a bit hard to hear after a good session. With the electric kit, Bianca can wear headphones, which could be good for the neighbors, but not good if the volume is turned up as I know she would do. She has layed towels on the skins, but this deadens the sound to much and doesn't sound the same. There is also a chance of a stick breaking and spinning back and getting her, the chance of it hitting her eye is minimal, but there is always that chance. When she first started playing, she would end up with aching wrists, arms, shoulders, legs and back. Until over time building the strength in these areas as with any new exercise.

Deborah Lacey's insight:

I just wonder as she gets older how will the continues jarring, even though it is minimal in her wrists, shoulders, ankles and knees affect her, as well the damage to her hearing. May have to get her to wear ear muffs, just so she doesn't go deaf at a young age.

Bianca stopped playing for awhile as somebody made the comment to her at high school that girls don't play drums. It has been a bumpy ride to get her to play again, and I know her parents miss the sounds of the skins being played.

Kristina: Bike racing

Kristina: Bike racing | OCHS Quest 1, 2 & 3 | Scoop.it

This is Kristina, her hobby is racing bikes. She competes in road and velodrome events such as scratch, handicap and keirin. When she is in full training, Kristina can do anywhere up to 500kms a week, while some of this training is at a velodrome, road work makes up the rest, with an average speed of 29km/h.  The condition of roads make riding on them interesting with the mixture of being rough and then the odd pothole thrown in there. Her major enemy while riding on the road is the cars, some of them take no notice of bike riders. The velodrome racing leaves no room for error, with riders riding so close together,  wheel contact can send a rider flying over the handle bars.

Deborah Lacey's insight:

After having the chance to go to the Bundaberg velodrome and watch some spectacular racing, and see the speed some of the riders can get up to certainly leaves your heart in your mouth when you see riders come in close to each other, just hoping that they don't touch wheels together. I hope with the new rules that have been introduced helps keep riders on the road safe, but some riders need to take responsibility for their actions on the road also. It is not always the driver of the cars fault.

Lynne: Trap shooter

Lynne: Trap shooter | OCHS Quest 1, 2 & 3 | Scoop.it

This is Lynne, one of her favourite things to do is go trap shooting also known as clay pigeon shooting. There are a number of issues involved with this sport. Firearms are an important piece of equipment, they need to be kept clean so there is no malfunctions, storing them correctly at home and when traveling with them, as well as the ammunition used to fire the rifle.

When they check to see if the gun fits the person, another person looks down the barrel and checks the position of the eye, crazy isn't it. Older shooters like to load their own ammunition, at least one out of every 25 has been loaded incorrectly, which can be very dangerous when discharged.

There are risks of injures to hearing, eye sight - gun powder residue, shoulder, face and checks due to the recoil of the rifle as well as trip and falls.

It has been known that when a new shooter hits a target they turn round without opening the weapon to the people watching, this having the danger of a loaded weapon facing the spectators. In the event of new shooters, there is a cage that they shot from to manage this issue.

While a shooter is waiting their turn, they rest an open firearm on their foot, this has the potential to slip and cause injury.

Deborah Lacey's insight:

While trap shooting is an interesting past time, there is a lot to think about to keep this a safe sport not only for the shooter, but also the spectators.
