How_to_Manage_Work_Health_and_Safety_Risks.pdf

Stephen Edstein's insight:

Accidents and ill health can ruin lives and affect your business too if output is lost, machinery is damaged, insurance costs increase or you have to go to court. Because of this James is legally required to assess the risks in his workplace so that he can put in place a plan to control the risks. That plan is called a risk assessment.

The above article outlines how James can perform a risk assessment. A risk assessment is a careful examination of what, in his work, could cause harm to people, so that he can weigh up whether he has taken enough precautions or should do more to prevent harm.

writing_work_method_statement_plain_english_guidelines_0231.pdf

Stephen Edstein's insight:

A Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is an explanation of all steps that need to be completed on a job, all steps. From arriving
on-site, unloading the vehicle, checking the workplace, carrying out the job, clearing the workplace, loading the vehicle and leaving site. Its purpose is to show that the people who are carrying out the work have thought through the whole process, assessed any risks involved and taken suitable measures to minimise the risk to themselves, other people and properties.

It is important for James to know what a SWMS is, how it is written and how to complete one. This PDF would be useful to James as it is concise and easy to follow.

Les H - Personal Trainer

Les H - Personal Trainer | Quest 2 & 3 | Scoop.it

Les operates his own personal training business. He offers one on one sessions all the way up to large sized boot camps.

Stephen Edstein's insight:

Manuel Handling

As a personal trainer Les is required to lift and manoeuvre heavy weights. To avoid serious injury this requires correct form. As an instructor he is also responsible for the form of his clients. Les says when lifting weights there is nothing more important than correct technique. and that we should never sacrifice good form in order to attempt a lift we are not capable of.

Mechanical

Les has been trained to use and operate various weight lifting machines. These machines often have numerous moving parts which can create pinch and crushing points. If not used correctly these machines can place the body in unnatural positions and with the addition of weight can cause serious injury.

Hydration

Vigorous exercise generates a lot of sweat which if not supplemented with sufficient amounts of water can lead to dehydration. When we become dehydrated we become dizzy and our motor skills diminish. If this occurs when we are lifting weights, we can lose control of the weight and our form which can lead to serious injuries. Les always carries a bottle of water with him throughout the day  and encourages his clients to do the same.
