The History of Occupational Therapy. Learn how occupational therapy evolved from an ancient theory into a modern practice.

The Greeks and the Romans believe they are the first to use Occupational Therapy as a form of treatment back in 100 BCE.  A guy names A  would make his patient will mental illness take baths, listen to music, excercise, and get massages.  He was improving but OT was still so new that it wasn't considered a real profession.  During the 18th century in Europe they switched there method from using medal chains to using leisure activities to help patients in a hospital. Occupational therapy wasn't considered a profession until 1910.  It was centered around the idea to help enable people with disabilities to be able to function to their full capability.  Occupational therapy is now considered a "thriving medical profession."  It has moved into schools, hospital setting, care facilities, and home treatment.

Jillian Ferragonio's insight:

In 1917, "The National Society for the Promotion of Occupational Therapy was founded."  A few years later a directory of occupational therapist was created so no one could pretend to be an OT while working in a hospital or another setting.  From the time Occupational therapy was founded it has evolved through events and important people.

In 1910 during WWI, the first type of OT's were introduced as reconstructive aides.  They not only helped to heal there wounds but they enabled the soldiers to regain purpose in their lives.  Leading up to the 1930's Occupational therapists began working with people with mental illness and also began to use a more scientific method.  Between 1942 and 1950, people who had a spinal cord injury or brain injury had the chance to live due to new medical advances. In the 1960's-1970's OT's were developing treating plans unique to the individual.  Occupational Therapy is always evolving through better education and prevention.  "Quality of life was becoming increasingly accepted as a goal of occupational therapy intervention."
