They Said That Drinking Lemon Water In The Morning Is Good For You... | RiseEarth

They Said That Drinking Lemon Water In The Morning Is Good For You... | RiseEarth | Healthy Eating News | Scoop.it

"Drinking lemon water has tons of health benefits. You see, lemon juice is loaded down with things like antioxidants, protein, vitamins both B and C, flavonoids, and potassium. It has been widely known for its antiviral immune building capabilities. Drinking lemon water helps to build up your immune system giving it a much-needed boost by fighting off infections with its high levels of bioflavonoids. These include Citric acid, magnesium, calcium, and pectin. Drinking warm lemon water on an empty stomach cleanses the body in a sense and flushes out your system. This promotes weight loss and helps balance the body’s pH as well as helping with digestive issues. Why would you not want to drink lemon water every day with benefits like these?"

Academic oligarchy: Majority of science publishing is controlled by just six companies

Academic oligarchy: Majority of science publishing is controlled by just six companies | Healthy Eating News | Scoop.it

July 19, 2015 - "The flow of science in this modern age is largely controlled by just six corporate publishing groups, which by calculated design have been gobbling up the journal market since at least the 1970s. And a new study out of Canada reveals that this mass consolidation of publishing power is, to a large extent, skewing what passes as scientific progress. Many smaller publishers have been absorbed into larger ones, for instance, and academic research groups have become increasingly beholden to the interests of these major publishers, which tend to favor large industries like pharmaceuticals and vaccines."

13 Reasons to Avoid Pesticides

13 Reasons to Avoid Pesticides | Healthy Eating News | Scoop.it
Check out Naturally Savvy's top reasons to avoid pesticides and save your health.

Via Sandi Cornez

Sandi Cornez's curator insight, July 26, 2015 2:28 AM

Why is it a good idea to avoid pesticides?  Pesticides are lab engineered chemicals designed to halt, thwart, and ultimately kill the progression of pests, insects which land on food crops, farms, play areas, parks, forests, yards, gardens, neighborhoods, and golf courses. Most of the man made chemical toxins have not been tested for short or long term exposure related to health implications.  Yet each year, newer pesticides are created and enter the environment.

Every person in this country even newborns have been exposed to a dizzying multitude of chemicals, pesticides, toxins since the day they were born. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, there are at least 1,000 toxic chemicals that deserve attention which they're not getting. American citizens have no assurances at this time that the most dangerous chemicals will be regulated or banned in a timely manner.

Chemical safety reform doesn't  seem to be a top priority for the U.S. Congress. The herbicide 2,4-D from Dow chemical has been labeled "possibly carcinogenic to humans". This was the decision by an organization of the world's leading cancer experts. The government recently approved this toxic chemical for use on genetically engineered (GMO) crops. According to Mary Ellen Kustin, Senior Policy Analyst for Environmental working group (EWG), "we have known for decades that 2,4-D is harmful to the environment and human health, especially for the farmers and farm workers applying these chemicals to crops".

Exposure to 2,4-D has been associated with a higher risk for Parkinson's Disease, immune system problems, and hypothyroidism.  Glyphosate, the most commonly used herbicide in the U.S. and an ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup, on 1,500 endangered species is slated to finally be studied by the EPA for the next five years.

Health Tips:  Buy organic and/or certified organic real whole plant based foods and grow your own produce. Be a health activist for your family in regard to environmental toxins, pesticides, chemicals, herbicides, fungicides, air and water quality.

Also be an environmental activist signing petitions, writing or calling your Congress person. You and your family's health and well being is most important and it's time for Congress and the government to start paying  attention to the American public and not to corporate interests and lobbyists.

Follow groups like EWG,  Center for Food Safety,  Institute for Responsible Technology, Food and water Watch.

The New Live-Longer Food, and 5 Ways to Eat It

The New Live-Longer Food, and 5 Ways to Eat It | Healthy Eating News | Scoop.it

"There are lots of healthy nuts out there—just don’t forget the humble peanut! Not only do peanuts cram a ton of protein into a little package (about 7 grams per 1-ounce serving), they may also offer the promise of a longer, healthier life, according to a new study in JAMA Internal Medicine. Researchers tracked data on nearly 72,000 people in the U.S. and found that those who ate more than 18 grams of peanuts a day had a 21 percent lower risk of death from any cause. “Peanuts, like tree nuts, are rich in nutrients such as unsaturated fatty acids, fiber and vitamins, which are all beneficial for health,” says senior author Xiao-Ou Shu, MD. You can get the perks by working in either a small handful of whole nuts or 1 to 2 tablespoons of peanut butter daily."

Top 15 Anti-Inflammatory Herbs For Aches and Pains - Healthy Holistic Living

Top 15 Anti-Inflammatory Herbs For Aches and Pains - Healthy Holistic Living | Healthy Eating News | Scoop.it
If you’re currently taking drugs for your inflammation, then you need to read this article. First things first – chronic inflammation doesn’t need to be your enemy. That is, as long as you know how to properly...

Sandi Cornez's curator insight, July 23, 2015 9:48 PM

Did you know by making simple lifestyle changes you can reduce your risk of getting inflammation which causes chronic disease?  First on your list would be to consume real whole plant based foods and reduce or eliminate all processed food and sugar. Real whole plant based foods are the original anti-inflammatory foods your body craves. You'd be surprised how your body responds when you give it the nutrients it needs. And when your body feels better, so do you.

Health tips:  Did you know that processed foods are biologically dead? Is this what you really want to eat? Probably not. when you grocery shop, use your hands and nose to feel/smell food that's ripe (hint more nutrients). When you incorporate the highest quality of food, which means the greater nutritional value, you're sending your body a love letter.

Go to Farmer's Markets on the weekends or during the week, if possible. Most of these foods are picked by hand ensuring you get the best bang for your buck.  If you're buying non organic, look for "locally grown" or "sustainably grown".

In your community, shop at a local market, not a big supermarket. Three good reasons: 1.  the travel time it takes for food to be displayed in your store. The longer the food sits in the truck, the less nutritional quality.  2.  And when you buy in your community, your money stays there.  3. Shopping local lets you learn more about the farmers whose produce you're buying and you have more say about what you want to see on the shelves.

Consider a CFA (Community food Association) and/or grow your own food in your own container/yard or in a community garden where you can meet others and collaborate on what you grow. Growing foods acknowledges your interconnectedness with nature and lets your children see where food really comes from.

How probiotics and prebiotics team up in your gut

How probiotics and prebiotics team up in your gut | Healthy Eating News | Scoop.it
Probiotics are like helpfulhouseguests. You have to feed them to keep them around.

Via Sandi Cornez

Sandi Cornez's curator insight, July 20, 2015 8:03 PM

Are you eating fermented foods, prebiotics,  and probiotics for good digestion and a healthy GI tract i.e. your gut? What are prebiotics? Prebiotics are the foods that feed your healthy bacteria. One type of soluble fiber called fructooligosaccharides (FOS) (found in veggies, fruits, grains) and an aloe juice product is a preferred meal for healthy bacteria.

Health Tips:  Incorporating all three (fermented foods, prebiotic foods and taking a high quality probiotic supplement) with your daily meals, providing you are consuming all or mostly all healthy plant based foods will help your digestion to run smoothly.

Asparagus, Jerusalem artichokes, garlic, onions, and bananas are the veggies rich in FOS. Fermented foods have been shown to preserve nutrients in foods and help break foods down to a more digestible state. Do your best to make your own fermented foods or buy organic products that have not been pasteurized. Pasteurization kills the health benefits. You can save money making your own fermented foods as store bought are spendy and don't last as long. Homemade fermented foods last longer due to lacto-fermentation.

Probiotics improve your immune system, bowel health, and help your digestion. Fermented foods give your body the benefits of probiotics.
