Nursing People 85 Plus

Nursing People 85 Plus | Nursing Education - Conferences and Seminars | Scoop.it
General Description

This conference aims to enhance nurses' knowledge about the special considerations that need to be taken into account when assessing and planning care of people aged 85 and over. There is a particular focus on risk reduction and assessment in this age group, including relevant topics such as medicines, mental health, neurological changes and continence. These two days will provide a comprehensive and relevant overview of the needs of the person aged 85 and over, however learning can also be applied across other contexts of nursing such as aged care, community care and acute care.

Need for Program

Increasing numbers of people are living beyond 85 years of age. In 2007, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, people aged over 85 made up 1.6% of our population, and this is predicted to increase to between 4.9 and 7.3% by 20561. As people age, they are much more at risk for adverse events such as falling, which can trigger a cascade of disease processes. It is essential that nurses have appropriate gerontological knowledge and skills to perform assessments so as to develop care plans that are risk averse.
