The Impact of Emerging Technology on Nursing Care: Warp Speed Ahead

Areana Hensler's insight:

5. Nurses can now access their patients information through Electronic Healthcare records (EHR). These records are available 24 hours 7 days a week. This allows better care for a patient.

6.Robotics are taking a huge imapct on nurses in the future. They want to eventually be direct service providers!

7. They have machines now that perform 3-d printing.  They use "bio-ink" made from living cells that form into human tissue.  And that eventually turning into an organ.

8. New nurses coming up have to keep up with the constant changing technology in the medicla field.  They have to know how to know how to use the technology, and learn and understand genomics.

9. Nurses can no longer go to college and come out expecting to be done with school, .  In the future, nurses must become a a professional in sharing and collecting the knowledge.  In other words, they are really always learning new things.

10.  When it comes to the new technology coming out, nurses face four leadership challenges....They are balancing the human element with technology, balancing costs and benefits, assuring the technology used is Ethical, and training a technology enabled nurse workforce and assuring ongoing competency.

11. Nursing leaders and maybe nursing schools should begin thinking about what classes or what information needs to be given to future nurses in order to work properly and use the new up-to-date technology at all times to ensure full care for a patient.

'Gene machines' to cut scan time

'Gene machines' to cut scan time | Topic 1! NEW MACHINES | Scoop.it
Two “gene machines” that have been installed at a children’s hospital will cut the time it takes to scan for rare and inherited genetic disorders from a year to just days, doctors have said.
Areana Hensler's insight:

1. Gene machines are the new it machine.  This machine can test up to 100 genes at once rather than a regular blood test that can only test one gene at a time.

2. This test works faster than the old tests.  It only takes a maximum of 8 weeks and as little as 2 weeks.

Automatic observation equipment can detract from nursing skills

Automatic observation equipment can detract from nursing skills | Topic 1! NEW MACHINES | Scoop.it
Automated technology to monitor vital signs has emerged as a contested area in the drive to maintain standards of patient observation.
Areana Hensler's insight:

3. Many of the machines in hospitals now have machines to take vital signs and such.  Many people are saying that nurses pay more attention to the machine and don't actually take the role of being a nurse.

4. This new technology is making nurses not observe the patient as much as they would without the technology. In fact, 42 percent believe the reliance on these machines make them less likely to identify  or notice symptoms of the patient or harmful signs.
