Indigenous communities closure: West Australian Premier Colin Barnett says 'no person will be forced from their land' - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) | NUR329 Public Health | Scoop.it
The West Australian Government softens its language about its plan to shut down scores of remote Aboriginal communities, saying none will be forced to close.
Angela Sheedy's insight:

In late 2014 the Western Australian Government announced that it planned to close up to 150 Aboriginal remote communities. Economic factors were key to this decision without taking into consideration some key social implications. There was an instant and forceful outcry from Australians that this was unfair and would lead to further dispossession, homelessness and increased social and emotion wellbeing issues. Read More Here

Primary health care, Interviews with Professionals

Angela Sheedy's insight:
The following resource has been developed for CDU health students and consists of a series of interviews with health professionals from Non-government organisations (NGO) in the primary health care industry. NGO’s are great contributors to community health and often we have no idea exactly what they do or how we can use their services either for ourselves or clients. The interviews presented here are with a selection of multidisciplinary health professionals from The Cancer Council, The Heart Foundation, Family Planning Welfare Association, TEAMhealth and NT Healthy Living. Each person was asked a series of questions around the following six focus areas: health care systems, primary health care provision, health student’s preparation, chronic disease management, health education (for clients) and health promotion. Take the time to review these and for the purpose of this topic have a listen to how they have responded to questions around areas such as the type of clients they work with, their team members and health promotion. You may also like to listen to what advice they have for health students interested in working in their area of practice. There is an email address attached to the site (and examples of how to reference the site) in the credits- feedback is always welcome.

Allison Hermann, PhD's curator insight, December 20, 2016 2:07 PM
States spend very little on prevention and treatment (http://www.centeronaddiction.org/addiction/state-spending-addiction-risk-use), mHealth will play an increasingly central role as public funding decreases:

"The mobile health (mHealth) industry is growing rapidly with new technologies that have the power to revolutionize health care. From automated text messaging services that educate parents and teachers about how to talk to children about the dangers of drugs to counseling apps that provide real-time support for patients in need, these technologies present incredible opportunities for preventing and treating SUDs."

Chronic disease workforce portal « Chronic conditions « Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet | NUR329 Public Health | Scoop.it
Angela Sheedy's insight:
The portal provides information about chronic conditions that are a problem for all Australians but particularly for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people including: heart disease, diabetes, respiratory (lung) diseases, cancers and kidney disease. It also covers physical activity and nutrition as these factors influence many chronic conditions.

" The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health performance framework 2014 report noted that chronic disease accounts for two-thirds of the health gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians. The majority ( 70%) of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander deaths in 2008-12 were due to chronic diseases (e.g. circulatory disease, cancer, diabetes, respiratory disease, and kidney disease). Our new portal will save busy health practitioners considerable time by providing them with up to date information and resources about chronic disease " HealthInfoNet Director Professor Neil Drew,

Ice use and access on the rise: report

Ice use and access on the rise: report | NUR329 Public Health | Scoop.it
A report into methamphetamine availability and trends suggests ice has become a lot easier to access and users are becoming heavier in their consumption.
Angela Sheedy's insight:

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) report into methamphetamine availability and trends examined drug use over 10 years in Australia and found ice use was on the rise.   In 2007, just 26 per cent of new methamphetamine users chose the ice form of the drug but in 2013 that number had increased to 43 per cent, AIHW spokesperson Geoff Neideck said.  Find out more here
