“Nudge theory” explored to boost medication adherence

“Nudge theory” explored to boost medication adherence | Nudges | Scoop.it

“What matters is the behavior you want to change, not necessarily the disease process. If you’re trying to improve medication adherence, you want to do that whether it is a patient with congestive heart failure or diabetes,” said Paresh Shah, MD, director of general surgery and vice chair of surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center, during an event at MATTER in Chicago this spring. He is also the co-founder of CareCentra.

ESPACOMP Medication Adherence Reporting Guideline

ESPACOMP Medication Adherence Reporting Guideline | Nudges | Scoop.it
Research on assessing or managing medication adherence applies approaches from observational, interventional, and implementation science that spans many disciplines and demands coherent conceptualization, valid methods, appropriate analyses, and complete and accurate reporting. To ensure such reporting, the European Society for Patient Adherence, COMpliance, and Persistence (ESPACOMP) Medication Adherence Reporting Guideline (EMERGE) recommends standard reporting approaches based on an accepted taxonomy.

Behavioural insights to navigate complex healthcare markets

Behavioural insights to navigate complex healthcare markets | Nudges | Scoop.it
The European Union alone spends €700bn (£624 bn) annually on chronic disease management. Healthcare systems, which were initially designed for single disease states, are now required to manage polypharmacy and to also coordinate care. This is an unprecedented challenge. Now, policymakers are developing new care ecosystems, increasingly driven by home care and patient self-management.

Building trust through technology for medication adherence

"People can be predictably and systematically irrational," said Dr. George Savage, chief medical officer of Proteus Digital Health, which makes sensors for trackable pills. "Even though I know this medicine is good for me and I should be taking it, I may not. People want to get well, but nevertheless, they fail to do the right thing."
The solution, many say, is for the healthcare system to proactively intervene.

Learning a Little About Something Makes Us Overconfident

Learning a Little About Something Makes Us Overconfident | Nudges | Scoop.it
Perhaps this observation can explain the results of a survey sponsored by the Association of American Colleges & Universities. Among college students, 64% said they were well prepared to work in a team, 66% thought they had adequate critical thinking skills, and 65% said they were proficient in written communication. However, among employers who had recently hired college students, less than 40% agreed with any of those statements. The students thought they were much further along in the learning curve toward workplace success than their future employers did.

Beyond Quantified Self: Three Behavior Change Strategies that Work

Beyond Quantified Self: Three Behavior Change Strategies that Work | Nudges | Scoop.it
Quantified self is the linchpin of nearly every health device/app on the market. We can track nearly any behavior or bodily function, including steps, calories, blood pressure, blood sugar, and now even gut gases. In spite of how far technology has come in quantifying everything the body does, we have not seen long term engagement and we have pretty tepid data regarding behavior change.

The Emerging World of Online Health Communities

The Emerging World of Online Health Communities | Nudges | Scoop.it
We are witnessing the emergence of a new phenomenon in health care: self-organizing, online communities of patients, caregivers, clinicians, researchers, academics, and industry, all focused on a particular disease.
Beeyond's insight:

Online health platforms form an ecology of disparate and loosely bound communities operating on a variety of niche digital platforms that are largely evolving outside the world of traditional health policy and health care institutions. As of yet, there is little coordination, empirical research, or work to theoretically describe these online communities. However, we know from other, well-known digital platforms like KickStarter38 DegreesMoveOn, and OpenIDEO just how quickly online platforms can evolve, disrupt old business models, and create entirely new ones.

Adherence to Medication

The full benefit of many effective medications will be achieved only if patients adhere to prescribed treatment regimens. Unfortunately, applying terms such as “noncompliant” and “nonadherent” to patients who do not consume every pill at the desired time can stigmatize them in their future relationships with health care providers. This article on medication adherence (or compliance) reviews strategies to assess and enhance this important aspect of patient care.

The Psychology of Clinical Decision Making — Implications for Medication Use

The Psychology of Clinical Decision Making — Implications for Medication Use | Nudges | Scoop.it
The key problem is medicine’s ongoing assumption that clinicians and patients are, in general, rational decision makers. In reality, we are all influenced by seemingly irrational preferences in making choices about reward, risk, time, and trade-offs that are quite different from what would be predicted by bloodless, if precise, quantitative calculations.

Contributor Peter Minnium explains how brands in the information overload era can appeal to the basic human processes that govern decision-making.
Beeyond's insight:
When brand messages are communicated differently across multiple media platforms, counterproductive, inconsistent and incoherent messaging often results, seriously undermining messaging efforts. Behavioral science holds the key to overcoming or avoiding many of these obstacles.
