Tony Palmeri's curator insight, October 24, 2015 5:26 PM

I scooped this resource because I was intrigued how a principal can raise student achievement. Is there a secret sauce? I applaud the article that points out that many schools with privileged populations and admirable student achievement do not necessarily have principals who are effective. I've done much studying on the concept of "value added measures" and certainly the demographics and student populations a school serves plays a large role in student achievement. Regardless of the individual differences, how much is the principal contributing to the overall achievement that is yielded? Would it be better or worse with someone else at the helm?

#1. Teachers are brain changers.

#2. The one whose neural pathways are changing is the one doing the learning.

#3. Critical thinking is more important than ever—which means we expect different results from learning.

Young school principals break any age stereotype - Tampa Bay Times

Young school principals break any age stereotype - Tampa Bay Times | NPSChat | Scoop.it
The idea of a school principal as the wizened elder doesn't fit. That's okay. RIVERVIEW — At 32, Derrick McLaughlin lacks the wrinkles and headful of gray hair that many might expect to see in an elementary school's leader.

For Students, Why the Question is More Important Than the Answer

For Students, Why the Question is More Important Than the Answer | NPSChat | Scoop.it

In a traditional classroom, the teacher is the center of attention, the owner of knowledge and information.

What would happen if the roles were flipped and students asked the questions?

That’s the premise of the Right Question Institute and a new book by its co-directors Dan Rothstein and Luz Santana. The book, Make Just One Change: Teach Students to Ask Their Own Questions, documents a step-by-step process to help students formulate and prioritize questions about nearly everything.
