Harlem Renaissance

The Harlem Renaissance was the first movement with African-American literature during 1923 to 1935. This movement took place around the time of African-Americans migration from the south. Alaine Locke said, "Harlem is not merely the largest Negro community in the world, but the first concentration in history of so many diverse elements of Negro life."

Written in 1929 by William Faulkner, The Sound and the Fury was about the Old South.

Modernism

Modernism began in the 1890's and lasted for about 55 years, ending in 1945. Modernism is defined by ones religion, politics, or society.

Willa Carther wrote 12 novels including My Antonia, which was written in 1918. This book describes immigrant farm life.

Winesburg, Ohio, which was written in 1919 around the time of womens sufferage, was wrote by Sherwood Anderson. He expresses the many emotions and frustrations of small-town Midwestern life to the stereotypical "big city" life.

In the middle of the Great Depression, Richard Wright wrote Native Son. It is about the life a poor black man trying to get by when he feels surrounded by whites.

The Lost Generation

From the 1920's to the 1930's was considered the Lost Generation. This movement started just shortly after World War 1 ended. The book known for introducing the Lost Generation was called The Sun Also Rises, written by Ernest Hemingway. It takes its place in Paris and Spain during the 1920's, describing the life of a group of people suffering and struggling after the war has ended.
