A Real Solution to Feeding the World: Family Farms

A Real Solution to Feeding the World: Family Farms | Noticias | Scoop.it
Family farms produce three-quarters of the world’s food;
Three-quarters of the world’s farms are smaller than one hectare (about the size of a city block);
Small, diversified farms produce more than twice as much food per acre than industrialized farms. This is partly because smaller farms use less pesticides, fertilizers, and antibiotics per unit of production than industrialized farms.
A 2015 meta-analysis found that industrialized farm yields were only about 10% higher than organic farm yields. This yield gap is much smaller than the amount of food that is wasted every year, which is as high as 40%.
The findings of the US National Research Council add further weight to Prof. Montgomery’s conclusions. Even if conventional farming currently helps feed the developed world, there are external costs to industrialized farming practices that cannot be ignored. Discussing a 2010 report on the future of US agriculture, the researchers said,

Many modern agricultural practices have unintended negative consequences, such as destruction of soils, erosion, and decreased water and air quality, and farmers have to consider these consequences while trying to increase production. If farmers are going to meet future demands, the US agriculture system has to evolve to become sustainable and think broadly—past the bottom line of producing the most possible.

A Yoga Home Practice Routine is vital to develop a sustainable and expanding yoga well-being goal. In addition to class attendance, any serious yoga student, no matter his or her level, has to develop at least a little regular practice at home, gym, or as part lifestyle exercise such as walking or surfing.

I loved this article. It is about embracing life and all of its conditions, I particularly liked the following extract: "There is no suppression or rejection of anything felt, there is no identifying, commenting, or making judgements on a personal level. One accepts — does not necessarily approve — but accepts the way one is feeling. And in that perspective, the spiritual path is developed."

Black Cumin Seed: The Ancient Remedy for All Diseases

Black Cumin Seed: The Ancient Remedy for All Diseases | Noticias | Scoop.it
“ Nigella sativa seeds have very little aroma but are carminative, meaning they tend to aid digestion and relieve gases in the stomach and intestines. They aid peristalsis and elimination. The essential oil of black cumin is antimicrobial and help to rid the intestines of worms.”

Nigella sativa is one the most revered medicinal seeds in history.

The best seeds come from Egypt where they grow under almost perfect conditions in oases where they are watered until the seed pods form. Black cumin seeds were found in the tomb of Tutankhamun. Though black cumin seeds are mentioned in the Bible as well as in the words of the Prophet Mohammed, they were not carefully researched until about forty years ago. Since this time, more than 200 studies have been conducted in universities.

One Of The World's Top Aging Researchers Has A Pill To Keep You Feeling Young

One Of The World's Top Aging Researchers Has A Pill To Keep You Feeling Young | Noticias | Scoop.it
“ Say someone came up to you selling a dietary supplement—a pill that you take once a day—that could boost your energy, improve your body’s ability to repair its DNA, and keep you healthier as you get older. It might sound like a scam, or more likely just another in a sea of confusing, undifferentiated claims that make up the $20 billion dollar supplement industry. But let’s say that someone is MIT’s Lenny Guarente, one of the world’s leading scientists in the field of aging research. And he’s being advised by five Nobel Prize winners and two dozen other top researchers in their fields. You might pay a little more attention.”

From Ozzie Gontang:Laura Fine taught me what it means to have an Attitude of Gratitude. Appreciation has been shared by so many patients who have been part of the Healing Hearts and Lifestyle Change Program at Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine. These gifts have been shared so deeply by my family and friends over the years. Today I am mindful of the love of my family as Kip and I visit Erin & John, Allison & Takaki this Thanksgiving here in Boston.

Sustainable Design at ION Hotel, Iceland

Sustainable Design at ION Hotel, Iceland | Noticias | Scoop.it
A place where luxury and design meet sustainability and adventure, all surrounded by lava fields and glacial lakes.Iceland is often dubbed "the land of fire and ice"— about the size of Kentucky, Iceland boasts some of the most starkly juxtaposed landscapes in the world. From black sand beaches to glacier fields to jagged peaks, the lava fields of otherworldly green moss to the countless active geysers, Iceland's landscape is stunning—and that's only the beginning. There's no better place to experience these extremes than the ION Hotel. Consistently awarded for both its design and sustainability, the ION's (slightly) remote location an hour east of Reykjavik makes it the ideal getaway to both relax and explore the country's extremes...

This New Type of Male Contraceptive Not Only Prevents Babies; It's Completely Reversible

This New Type of Male Contraceptive Not Only Prevents Babies; It's Completely Reversible | Noticias | Scoop.it
Until now, men have had only two serious options for preventing baby-making: condoms or 'the snip'.

A promising new product could be set to change all that, with animal trials indicating that it's not only close to 100 percent effective, but that it can also be fully reversed, making it less drastic than the vasectomy while still offering similar benefits.

Trademarked under the name Vasalgel, the contraceptive is a polymer gel being developed by the non-profit Parsemus Foundation in California, which aims to "find low cost solutions that have been neglected by the pharmaceutical industry".

We reported on Vasagel back in February after it showed itself to be effective in preventing rhesus monkeys from getting pregnant for up to two years.

The gel acts as a barricade to sperm when injected into the thin tube that channels sperm from each teste to the ejaculatory ducts – a tube also known as the vas deferens.

Sperm produced in the testes usually travel up the vas deferens to meet with other glands that add various substances to make up semen; when blocked by the gel, they are either embedded in the material or are simply reabsorbed by the body.
