Charles II of England - Wikipedia

Charles II of England - Wikipedia

Charles II was born in St James's Palace on 29 May 1630. His parents were Charles I (who ruled the three kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland) and Henrietta Maria (the sister of the French king Louis XIII). Charles was their second child.

Charles II (29 May 1630 – 6 February 1685)[c] was king of England, Scotland and Ireland. He was king of Scotland from 1649 until his deposition in 1651, and king of England, Scotland and Ireland from the restoration of the monarchy in 1660 until his death.
Ngozi Angeline Godwell's insight:
Charles II's father, Charles I, was executed at Whitehall on 30 January 1649, at the climax of the English Civil War. Although the Parliament of Scotland proclaimed Charles II king on 5 February 1649, England entered the period known as the English Interregnum or the English Commonwealth, and the country was a de facto republic, led by Oliver Cromwell. Cromwell defeated Charles II at the Battle of Worcester on 3 September 1651, and Charles fled to mainland Europe.

A report has revealed Northamptonshire County Council’s children’s services were the subject of 52 complaints to a government watchdog in the last year alone.

It is now more than two years since Ofsted’s damning report labelled the authority’s system for stopping neglect and abuse of children as “inadequate.”

Those are the standards, that is the culture of the council, it's various departments and other branches within the body.

Ngozi Angeline Godwell's insight:
The Allotment is an amazing project, which is bringing together members of the community from diverse backgrounds. People involved have visibly grown in confidence, found a new energy, and relaxed and chatted in a supportive environment whilst learning practical skills. Over the last few months some of those involved have expressed a sense of wonder at the natural world, a feeling of well-being and valued the opportunity to experience “me-time”.

Northampton - Wikipedia

Northampton - Wikipedia

The earliest reference to Northampton in writing occurred in 914 under the name Ham tune, literally meaning "home town". The prefix "North" was added later to distinguish it from other towns called Hampton, most prominently Southampton. The Domesday Book (1086) records the town as Northantone, which evolved into Norhamptone by the 13th century and later Northampton by the 17th century.

Northampton /nɔːrθˈæmptən/ is the county town of Northamptonshire in the East Midlands of England. It lies on the River Nene, about 67 miles (108 km) north-west of London and 50 miles (80 km) south-east of Birmingham. One of the largest towns in the UK, Northampton had a population of 212,100 in the 2011 census.

Ngozi Angeline Godwell's curator insight, July 10, 2017 12:16 AM
Archaeological evidence of settlement in the area dates back to the Bronze Age, Roman and Anglo-Saxon periods. During the Middle Ages, the town rose to national significance with the establishment of Northampton Castle, which was an occasional royal residence and regularly hosted the Parliament of England. Medieval Northampton had many churches, monasteries and the University of Northampton, which were all enclosed by the town walls. It was granted its first town charter by King Richard I in 1189 and its first mayor was appointed by King John in 1215. The town is also the site of two medieval battles; the Battle of Northampton (1264) and the second in 1460.

Northamptonshire County Council is the county council that governs the non-metropolitan county of Northamptonshire in England. It was originally formed in 1889 by the Local Government Act 1888. The county is divided into 57 electoral divisions, which return a total of 57 councillors. The council has been controlled by the Conservative Party since 2005.

As a non-metropolitan county council, the council is responsible for education, social services, libraries, main roads, public transport policy and fire services, trading standards, waste disposal and strategic planning.
Ngozi Angeline Godwell's insight:
Northamptonshire County Council has operated executive arrangements in the form of a Leader and Cabinet system since 2001. In December 2008 the council chose to adopt the revised Executive Leader and Cabinet arrangement.

Council homes in Northampton among the very worst in country.

Council homes in Northampton among the very worst in country. | Northamptonshire County Council (UK) | Scoop.it
COUNCIL houses in Northampton have come in the top 10 of a ‘list of shame’ detailing the country’s worst condition council homes.
Ngozi Angeline Godwell's insight:
With 48 per cent of Northampton’s 12,215 council houses not meeting the standard, Northampton Borough council has estimated that more than £129 million needs to be spent on the properties by 2015.

Sally Beardsworth (Lib Dem, Kingsthorpe) said the figures were in many cases down to the age of bathrooms and kitchens which automatically tip the home into ‘non-decency’ even if they were immaculate.

She added: “We are quite well aware of the situation as were the previous two administrations but, unfortunately, they didn’t make any financial provision for rectifying it and we are struggling to catch up.”

Councillor Beardsworth said £22 million would be spent in the next three years updating about a third of the council’s housing stock.
