NC forestry highlighted in green-energy bill
WNCN
The bill now headed to the Senate following a 70-43 vote would target Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design system.
David Waechter's insight:

This is an interesting observation and execution on the part of the NC Forestry stakeholders.  By sourcing locally produced lumber, one should earn LEED points above and beyond materials sourced from far away. This makes good sense and probably will be considered by other states.

“Food affordability will continue to decline, even if there is no domestic market for additional ethanol production.” North Carolina State University and North Carolina A& T State University commit themselves to positive action to ...
David Waechter's insight:

More acres will move into production and productivity will continue to rise as we learn how to grow crops for food and fuel in tandem...less will get exported and farmers will make more money.  Maybe the government can eliminate the subsidies since farmers will actually have something profitable to grow again.

Everyone is so worried about food being cheap, get yourself outside this summer and grow a garden.  Stop sucking down the corn syrup for your caloric intake daily and eat some fresh vegetables.  As a farmer who knows how little money actually makes it back to the farm where the real work happens, I do not find fault in the farmers making more money for the product they grow.

Go drive your gas guzzler, drink a Sun Drop and cry like a baby about food prices - it's the American way!

David Waechter's insight:

NC has only just begun to recognize the amount of biomass available to meet our growing global energy demands.  As these types of projects are established in the state, a growing competition for biomass feedstocks will surely ensue.  If you expect to demand wood fiber going forward, you will want a partner like Verdante Bioenergy to make sure all the considerations have been made upfront.

NC support for renewables remains strong, poll says
Charlotte Business Journal (blog)
North Carolinians never met a fuel for producing electricity they don't like, but they like solar best of all, according to a poll commissioned by the N.C.
David Waechter's insight:

All of the above NC! Legislators need to understand that this isn't some silly winners and losers argument proposed by Obama.  This is about our ability to prepare for a future of higher energy demand and reducing reliance on foreign sources.  Brazil is the example: they became energy independent producing biofuels galore and then they found offshore oil!  Guess what they paid the national debt off with....oil they didn't need because they were growing and producing their own liquid biofuels. This caused the value of the Real to skyrocket.  Strong economy, strong dollar, homegrown energy...can't we agree on prosperity at least?
