He’s “analytical” or “arrogant.” She’s “compassionate” or “inept.”

Deborah Spector's insight:

When you and your board members are asked to describe a leader, chances are you'll picture a male leader. This is an inherent societal bias that needs to end.

I suggest:

  • Women are better listeners
  • Women are known to be better at building consensus
  • Women are more inclusive and invite others to join them

It's time for us to share our skills around the table to make a stronger impact in creating a better world!!

United Way’s woman leaders volunteer more and give significantly larger donations than men. Fifty-one percent of individual engagement by affinity groups comes from women and 70 percent of the money raised by affinity groups comes from women.

Woman create change through their philanthropic efforts and empower others to join them in making a collective difference.

Frida Ghitis writes that as more prominent men are revealed to have abused their power and to have harassed women, the key question is whether a culture that condones this kind of behavior will change forever.

#MeToo burst into the spotlight October 15th with a tweet from Alyssa Milano suggesting if you've been sexually harassed or assaulted write 'me too' as a reply to her tweet.

 

Soon afterwards social media was flooded with stories of harassment and sexual assault. This became an opportunity for women and girls to raise their voices and begin to create social change.

Title IX states that no person in the US shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

 

Prior to Title IX's enactment women were not given the opportunities as men,  including scholarships and funding. Before Title IX in 1971 only 1% of the athletic budgets went to female sports on the college level. On the high school level male athletes outnumbered female athletes 12.5 to 1!

There are a number of reasons that nonprofit close. Known as sunsetting, the best case scenario is when an organization has fulfilled its mission.

 

The Dafna Fund, Israel's first and only feminist fund, is sunsetting after 15 years of strategically investing in gender mainstreaming, fostering women's empowerment and agents of social change.

 

This post described a year-long research project that sets the path for other nonprofits to continue making progress on social change initiatives. Kudos to the Fund for the setting the stage for positive change.

Mar. 8 is International Women’s Day, and it commemorates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women all across the world.

73 % of all nonprofit employees are women—with 45 % female CEO's. 21% of nonprofits with a $25 million or more budget have female CEOs.

 

But female CEOs make only 66% of male salaries! Additionally, women of color account for less than 14% of board members.

 

DonorPerfect launched "The Nonprofit Leadership Workbook for Woman" for International Women's Day. It is designed to help woman create a clear vision to becoming better leaders and create an action plan to reach those goals.

The Believe in Yourself Project promotes a positive body image among young women and provides charitable donations of dresses to underprivileged girls for school dances and special occasions.
Deborah Spector's insight:

Sam Sisakhti is the founder of UsTrendy, an ecommerce site. In an effort to have a positive influence on young women, Sam started the Believe in Yourself Project one year ago.

 

The Believe in Yourself Project is an American non-profit charity organization dedicated to providing brand-new, unworn designer dresses for girls to wear at school functions. Many teen girls are up against unobtainable social standards placed upon them-which are not just unhealthy, but often times unaffordable. In an effort to close this gap, The Believe In Yourself Project is dedicated to the gainful advancement and empowerment of young women with a gift of confidence.

 

One of the foundation’s activities is donating dresses to underprivileged girls.
