How To Evaluate Your Nonprofit’s CEO | The Agitator - Fundraising, Direct Marketing and Advocacy Strategies for Nonprofits

"Earlier this week we reported on our survey of fundraisers’ appraisals of the fundraising prowess and commitment of their CEOs.

Our fundraisers gave their CEOs pretty low grades!

We asked whether some independent party like Charity Navigator or the Better Business Bureau should rate nonprofit CEOs and Boards — 35% said yes to that idea; but 23% said no, and 42% were not sure.

Warned one pundit: “They haven’t figured out how to accurately and fairly rate non-profits, I wouldn’t sic them on CEOs.” And: “But NOT the BBB, please – are you kidding?!” And: “CN and BBB already fail at rating nonprofits by using a one size fits all approach and I shudder at what they would consider appropriate for CEO and Board evaluation.

And finally: ” I am all for having independent reviews of nonprofit organizations. However, I do not believe Charity Navigator or the BBB are sufficiently knowledgeable or qualified in this area. Perhaps AFP or the Center for Philanthropy at IU would be better qualified.”

OK, point taken!

I Don’t Get No Respect. Development Staff Are the Rodney Dangerfields of the Nonprofit World - Pamela Grow | Donor Cultivation and Management | Scoop.it
Does the great divide exist between fundraisers and program professionals?

So, how can fundraisers and program staff get along?

One commenter wrote “Could it be that those who are successful fundraisers possess different personal characteristics than those who are successful program directors/coordinators?” which brought to mind an old LinkedIn discussion about why people got involved in nonprofit work.  I was amazed at the diversity in backgrounds of the respondents – and yet there was one strong commonality.

How to Woo Talent From the For-Profit World

How to Woo Talent From the For-Profit World | Donor Cultivation and Management | Scoop.it

Social enterprises and nonprofits increasingly recognize the need to adopt management disciplines used successfully in the for-profit world. And a great potential source of talent with the right skills are professionals who change career lanes — people with experience and training in accounting, finance, human resources and strategy who leave corporate jobs to follow their passion to have a social impact. The Social Business Trust, The Gates Foundation, Endeavor, Technoserve,Absolute Return for Kids, and others already draw heavily on talent from for-profit firms as a source of these skills.

But what many social enterprises often fail to recognize is that private-sector recruits often come to them looking to build new skills, not just provide the ones they already have. For ambitious young professionals, the abilities they develop fairly quickly at a social enterprise are the sorts of listening, communications, problem-solving, and relationship skills that take years to acquire by climbing the corporate ladder.

Democracy and Philanthropy (SSIR)

Democracy and Philanthropy (SSIR) | Donor Cultivation and Management | Scoop.it
How private giving can contribute to the needs of American democracy.

What role does philanthropy play in a democracy? And what role ought philanthropy play in a democracy?

These are old questions made new again through the confluence of several powerful trends in the United States:

• Rigid political polarization in US politics
• A growing interest in and experimentation with online civic and political engagement, including open government and civic crowdfunding
• Community organizations threatened by decades of federal and state budget crises
• Record low levels of public confidence in Congress
• In the wake of Citizens United, increasing concern about the expanded role of nonprofits in electoral politics

We are a volunteer led organization and do not charge non-profits for our services. Not sure about saying that we do not charge non-profits for our services…while it’s true, it is also a bit confused since it’s also true that non-profits pay for our services…should we something like “we work with any budget, from free-thousands”

Best of Times, or the Worst of Times for Nonprofit Fundraising?

Best of Times, or the Worst of Times for Nonprofit Fundraising? | Donor Cultivation and Management | Scoop.it

At my local community college, enrollment is up 30 percent but the budget remains flat. Between 30,000 and 60,000 nonprofits disappeared last year and two-thirds of all charitable nonprofits experienced decreasing or stagnant contributions in the first nine months of 2012, according to GuideStar.

At the same time, tech moguls gave 1.4 billion to charity. Fidelity Charitable, an affiliate of Fidelity Investments, took in $3.6 billion, making it a record year and the stock market is at its highest level in five years.

So is it the best of times, or the worst of times for nonprofit fundraising?

I say increase and decrease come in their own time. It's a law of nature. Change is the rule of life. "Doing good" doesn't entitle you to defy mother nature. When you are working for an important cause, you can't depend on fundraising being stable or unstable. If you want to know how to get donations for nonprofits, be prepared for both the best and the worst of times.

Twenty five years ago I was organizing a worldwide teleconference. In those days people weren't used to technology, especially as a means of fundraising. It was a hard sell. But it was a good cause and I believed in it, so I just put one foot in front of the other; step by step calling people and explaining why I thought they would benefit.

Reducing donation form abandonment | npENGAGE

Reducing donation form abandonment | npENGAGE | Donor Cultivation and Management | Scoop.it
7 Tips to Reduce Donation Form Abandonment
  • Include as few fields as possible – if the form looks long, more people will give up
  • Avoid a “review & confirm” step in the donation process – some people see these pages and think they are receipts and do not press the button to confirm
  • Include a prominent security badge – give a feeling of safety to reduce barriers to completion
  • Remove captchas – captchas have their place, but donation forms are rarely that place. Don’t make people jump through hoops when they are trying to give you their money
  • Include a short but compelling message on the form – remind them why they should complete this form and donate
  • Use single page forms – traditionally, single page forms have outperformed multiple page forms. However, this may change with more mobile users. Speaking of which . . .
  • Make sure your forms display well on mobile devices – more people are doing more actions on mobile phones. Make sure your forms are friendly for them
