Oppia - Bite Sized Journeys, By Anyone, For Anyone

Oppia - Bite Sized Journeys, By Anyone, For Anyone | Noa | Scoop.it

"Oppia is a tool for creating interactive online activities that enable students to learn by doing. Its creators believe that this is often a more effective and efficient way of learning than either watching videos or reading texts, since it allows the student to engage more deeply with the activity in a way that videos or books often do not."

Oppia is a new open source tool that allows you to create interactive learning activities. When you sign up (which is quick if you have a Google account) you will be informed that any explorations you create will be licensed under Creative Commons and will be shared. The exploration will be private until you are ready to publish. There are a number of explorations you may explore. The ones I checked out are set up as quizzes, with each question showing up individually. A wrong answer came up with a response to try again. Google maps was included in a different quiz where you had to locate a specific city. It is important to realize that this is beta and that changes may be made over time.

An online tutorial is available at https://code.google.com/p/oppia/

Teaching Students Not Standards

Teaching Students Not Standards | Noa | Scoop.it
There's a lot that I like about the Common Core standards. For one, as a former high school English teacher, I'm thrilled by the literacy standards for secondary math, science, and social studies.

The challenge in education is making substantive and real structural change. That has been thwarted because most change is prescriptive and is handed down from politicians, bureaucrats, and technocrats.

Lasting change which manifests more change and is healthy includes the local voices. This means teachers and community members should be included.

Antisocial Teenagers Unable to Empathize

Antisocial Teenagers Unable to Empathize | Noa | Scoop.it

Antisocial behavior in teens is worsening as their usage of social media, TV and games increases.

They become immune to how others feel and cannot sympathize with them. A recent study set out to find a connection between antisocial teenagers and their inability to empathize. Researchers found a link to regions of the brain that are used to process information and control impulses. When these brain activity centers are underdeveloped, it creates an inability to show empathy.

Marzano's 9 Effective Instructional Strategies (Infographic)

Marzano's 9 Effective Instructional Strategies (Infographic) | Noa | Scoop.it

"Effective schools make a big difference in student achievement. Effective leadership makes a positive difference, too. Effective teachers, however, directly impact student learning and achievement. It’s been shown that teachers who have a large repertoire of effective instructional strategies teach differently."

A literacy-rich environment in classrooms and schools, for example, is an important K-12 foundation to support and extend effective instruction. And, effective vocabulary instruction (here, here, here, and here, too) is an integral part of a comprehensive literacy framework and supports student learning and achievement. Building a common language educators is also important, though frequently lacking. A common language helps teachers, coaches, and administrators communicate more easily and specifically around instructional strategies associated with literacy instruction, educational initiatives, and the Common Core State Standards

These are helpful.
