Why night terrors occur

I secretively taped my father during one of his famous lectures on neurology and sleep. At 69 years old, the man is a wealth of well documented and accessibl...
OMGodding's insight:

Very intersting description of neurology in relation to night terrors.   It is unofficial and filmed in secret by the docotors son (!) but very informative none the less, worth a watch.

In this short clip Dr Leonard describes the processes that happen within the brain that create the conditions for night terrors to occur.

The only question I am left with, is that he describes the experience as being only emotional i.e. the feeling of terror and associatied action that the brain's 'emergency centre' automates -  screaming / sitting bolt up.  So then what is the 'halicination/dream' element?

Although I don't always remember any dream associated with the night terror sometimes I do - especially if I have had a halucination on waking I can sometimes track back to what was happening just before I woke screaming and sitting up boltright...  often it is some sort of whole experience that includes emotions and dreamlike visions.

I know that because night terrors occur in the delta not the REM phase they are not like normal dreams. My night terrors typically occur 30-60 mins after falling asleep.   Perhaps he is talking about night terrors in children which I understand are slightly different.

Some more research is needed....
