Near-field communications devices have some great innovative functions, but are there any risks when using NFC on your mobile phone?

Despite the benefits of NFC, it can still be used to send commands to your handset, and therefore must be used with caution.

 

For instance, a malicious tag could make your phone call or text a malicious number, or even erase the information on your handset.

 

As such, users must also be educated on the benefits and negative effects of this technology

You can beam a web page, a video, or other content from your screen to another device by bringing the devices together (typically back to back).
Before you begin: Make sure both devices are unlocked

NFC can also be used to share content - not large amounts of information, however.


After personally using Android Beam to share content between my phone and tablet, it appears to be very limited in that it can share lnks to websites or YouTube videos.

Coles in Australia starting to trial NFC payments - the system is starting to catch on in Australia. It's likely to improve over time. Also, considering the impact NFC has made in America, it's more than likely that other mainstream services and retail outlets will eventually start adopting this technology.

Samsung TecTiles allow for users to read and write NFC tags that can send basic commands to your phone, for instance the ability to play a particular song, open an app or call a contact. For instance, you could program a NFC tag to open the GPS app when the phone is placed on a car-holder.
