Mental health awareness is something to sing about at Stages Repertory Theatre, where education and outreach programs are complementing the May 18-June 24 Houston premiere of Next to Normal.

For example, the theater's community partner, the metro Houston branch of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, will have information about mental health and advocacy at every performance. On May 5, some staff members at Stages participated in Houston NAMI Walks, a nationwide fundraising and mental health awareness program. On select Sunday matinees, NAMI speakers will host post-show discussions with the cast and the audience about topics. (more)

"I feel like we were really able to work through several stages of this design for Next to Normal, each time finding new ideas and inspirations that would take the next version of the design in a slightly different direction. It was a long process, but it was continuously driven and developing, and yielded beautiful results." (more)

"Fantastic show...inspiring" | Facebook

EMILY E. - Fantastic show. Thank you so much for the opportunity to sit in on your tech rehearsal. Every character was very relatable and the music was incredible. The tech was done cleverly and really highlighted the story. As a high school theatre student, Next to Normal was, in a word, inspiring. I highly recommend this show to any fan of the arts.

“The material is handled so well that it becomes bigger than a show about mental illness — about family, marriage, parenting. With an exciting contemporary score, it’s got something for everyone, to touch you to your core. It’s an absolutely wonderful journey into what makes us human and how we connect to the important people in our lives.” (more)

"kinetically charged, beautifully nuanced, precisely sung" | Facebook

ROY H. - I have seen this amazing piece in workshop, off-B'way, regionally developed and evolved in DC, back on Broadway, and on tour...and Houston should be PROUD to call this version their own. ...a kinetically charged, beautifully nuanced, precisely sung production where every lyric and every emotion is literally at your fingertips in their intimate three quarter thrust. On through June 24 only, see it SOON because my bet is you will want to return as i already do. Don't let this prize slip by, hie thee to Waugh @ D'Amico and just....LET IT SHINE."
