How Doctors View and Use Social Media: A National Survey

How Doctors View and Use Social Media: A National Survey | Italian Social Marketing Network - Newsletter 159 | Scoop.it

Background

Doctors are uncertain of their ethical and legal obligations when communicating with patients online. Professional guidelines for patient-doctor interaction online have been written with limited quantitative data about doctors’ current usage and attitudes toward the medium. Further research into these trends will help to inform more focused policy and guidelines for doctors communicating with patients online. Objective

The intent of the study was to provide the first national profile of Australian doctors’ attitudes toward and use of online social media.

Hashtag healthcare : Twitter's new role in Medicine

Hashtag healthcare : Twitter's new role in Medicine | Italian Social Marketing Network - Newsletter 159 | Scoop.it

In the space of a few short years, Twitter has grown from several strands of inconsequential drivel to an information powerhouse. Originally conceived as a way to keep up to date with a small network of friends and family, the micro-blogging model, which sees the rapid exchange of quick-fire information, was soon recognised as an invaluable resource for professional organisations.

Etude: quelles sont les marques préférées des millennials ? | Italian Social Marketing Network - Newsletter 159 | Scoop.it

Health Apps and Health Policy: What Is Needed? - Health apps require robust regulatory approach: JAMA opinion

Health Apps and Health Policy: What Is Needed? - Health apps require robust regulatory approach: JAMA opinion | Italian Social Marketing Network - Newsletter 159 | Scoop.it
Substantial gaps exist today between what the marketplace is producing in terms of apps and what is needed to make care better. Specific approaches can be taken at the FDA and at federal agencies that support research and encourage redirection. The marketplace needs to produce applications that will be helpful to patients and health care organizations, along with the ability to identify them. Apps have enormous potential benefits, but these benefits will not be realized unless these issues are addressed.

A Patient Engagement Manifesto– 6 Principles of Partnership – Patient Empowerment Network - @JBBC | Italian Social Marketing Network - Newsletter 159 | Scoop.it

@JBBC

Recently I presented at a conference on the topic of patient engagement. I spoke to the audience, mainly comprised of digital technology start-ups, about the need to find ways to engage patients meaningfully in healthcare design.  Too many developers think they understand what patients need, but in reality, many appear to be motivated more by the cleverness of a technology than actual improvements in health outcomes.  A 2015 study from the New York University School of Medicine Department of Population Health reported that only 29% of smartphone owners using health apps say the apps have made a big impact on their health.

“Precision” Public Health — Between Novelty and Hype | NEJM

“Precision” Public Health — Between Novelty and Hype | NEJM | Italian Social Marketing Network - Newsletter 159 | Scoop.it

In May 2018, the National Institutes of Health

(NIH) began enrollment for a vast medical research

cohort. Named “All of Us,” it’s meant to

include 1 million U.S. volunteers, who will be studied

over 10 years at a cost of $1.45 billion.

The project promises to “lay

the scientific foundation for a new

era of personalized, highly effective

health care,” a counterpoint

to previous “‘one-size-fits-all’ medicine.”

All of Us derives from a decade’s

worth of developments in

the research world. In 2011, the

National Academies of Sciences,

Engineering, and Medicine called

for a “new taxonomy of human

disease,” stating that “opportunities

to define diseases more precisely

and to inform health-care

decisions” were “being missed.”1

Five years later, President Barack

Obama launched the Precision

Medicine Initiative. The concept

was promoted by NIH Director

Francis Collins, who defined it

as “prevention and treatment strategies

that take individual variability

into account.”2 A bandwagon

effect followed, with marked shifts

in resources and attention toward

precision medicine.

Citizen Science for public health - Health Promotion International - Oxford Academic | Italian Social Marketing Network - Newsletter 159 | Scoop.it

Community engagement in public health policy is easier said than done. One reason is that public health policy is produced in a complex process resulting in policies that may appear not to link up to citizen perspectives. We therefore address the central question as to whether citizen engagement in knowledge production could enable inclusive health policy making.

Social Marketing Quarterly

In the past, social marketing was subjected to the following types of critiques:

Social marketing has a number of limitations that inhibit its usefulness…. The relatively narrow, reductionist approach of social marketing tends to reduce serious health problems to individual risk factors and ignore the proven importance of the social and economic environment as major determinants of health (Wallack, 1990, pp. 157–158).

The need for a European Strategy on Global Health - Ilona Kickbusch - Scandinavian Journal of Public Health

The need for a European Strategy on Global Health - Ilona Kickbusch - Scandinavian Journal of Public Health | Italian Social Marketing Network - Newsletter 159 | Scoop.it

There is nothing more pragmatic than a strategy based on the best public health evidence available – evidence that has been collected over the last 150 years. It is only the lack of political will that makes it look idealistic and unattainable: if the public health leaders of the nineteenth century had been as timid we would not enjoy the health we have today in Europe. Indeed, making heath accessible to a large proportion of the world’s population and ensuring our common human security in health at the same time seems like one of the best deals around between idealism and realpolitik.

Is this Japanese concept the secret to a long, happy, meaningful life?

Is this Japanese concept the secret to a long, happy, meaningful life? | Italian Social Marketing Network - Newsletter 159 | Scoop.it

What’s your reason for getting up in the morning? Just trying to answer such a big question might make you want to crawl back into bed. If it does, the Japanese concept of ikigai could help.

Originating from a country with one of the world's oldest populations, the idea is becoming popular outside of Japan as a way to live longer and better.

While there is no direct English translation, ikigai is thought to combine the Japanese words ikiru, meaning “to live”, and kai, meaning “the realization of what one hopes for”. Together these definitions create the concept of “a reason to live” or the idea of having a purpose in life.

Finding Purpose

To find this reason or purpose, experts recommend starting with four questions:

  • What do you love?
  • What are you good at?
  • What does the world need from you?
  • What can you get paid for?

Finding the answers and a balance between these four areas could be a route to ikigai for Westerners looking for a quick interpretation of this philosophy. But in Japan, ikigai is a slower process and often has nothing to do with work or income.
