US Racetrack Denies Mexican Cocaine Cartel Chief Fixed $1 Million Race

US Racetrack Denies Mexican Cocaine Cartel Chief Fixed $1 Million Race | News & Politics | Scoop.it

The general manager of a U.S. horseracing track denied allegations Monday that the chief of Mexico's most violent drug cartel had fixed a $1 million race so his own horse would win.

According to two confidential FBI informants, Zetas leader Miguel Angel Trevino Morales, also known as "40," bragged that he had paid the gatekeepers at New Mexico's Ruidoso Downs $10,000 "to hold back the horses" competing against his own horse, Mr. Piloto, in the 2010 All American Futurity Race, which Mr. Piloto won.

I think the Miami Herald has been doing this for years: Algorithms now "writing" articles for newspapers and websites

I think the Miami Herald has been doing this for years: Algorithms now "writing" articles for newspapers and websites | News & Politics | Scoop.it

Via Yahoo:

The new reporter on the US media scene takes no coffee breaks, churns out articles at lightning speed, and has no pension plan.

That's because the reporter is not a person, but a computer algorithm, honed to translate raw data such as corporate earnings reports and previews or sports statistics into readable prose.

While computers cannot parse the subtleties of each story, they can take vast amounts of raw data and turn it into what passes for news, analysts say.

And with media companies under intense financial pressure, the move to automate some news production "does speak directly to the rebuilding of the cost economics of journalism," says Ken Doctor, an analyst with the media research firm Outsell...

Controversy as Miami company begins shipping humanitarian packages to Cuba (VIDEO) | News & Politics | Scoop.it

Via NBC Miami:

For the first time in 50 years a maritime vessel will be taking humanitarian aid straight to Cuba from Miami, but not without controversy.

International Port Corporation, based in Miami, will be making the shipments once a week, the only Florida company to do so. The first shipment of packages is expected to leave Miami Wednesday morning and arrive in Cuba Thursday morning.

But the packages are causing controversy among some Cuban exiles, including Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who sent a letter to the federal government last month asking for an investigation into possible violations of U.S. law...

Gallup Poll: Americans' Confidence in Television News Drops to New Low

Gallup Poll: Americans' Confidence in Television News Drops to New Low | News & Politics | Scoop.it

Via Gallup:

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Americans' confidence in television news is at a new low by one percentage point, with 21% of adults expressing a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in it. This marks a decline from 27% last year and from 46% when Gallup started tracking confidence in television news in 1993.

The findings are from Gallup's annual update on confidence in U.S. institutions, conducted June 7-10 this year. As such, the findings preceded the erroneous initial reports by cable-news networks CNN and Fox News regarding the U.S. Supreme Court's June 28 decision about the constitutionality of the U.S. healthcare law.

Among 16 U.S. institutions tested, television news ranks 11th, following newspapers in 10th place. The 25% of adults who express a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in newspapers is down slightly from 28% last year. Confidence in newspapers is now half of what it was at its peak of 51% in 1979...
