European patent law at crossroads | no patents on seeds

70,000 signatures against patents on seeds handed to the President of the European Parliament

Within the next coming months, the European Parliament will take a decision on the so-called European Unitary Patent. The coalition of No Patents on Seeds, is demanding that especially the interests of small and medium sized breeders, farmers and consumers are respected by this new law. It urges that access to breeding materials as well as marketing of seeds and livestock cannot be restricted by patents and seeks legal clarification on this issue.

you can still sign the petition at

Vandana Shiva: corporate monopoly of seeds must end

Vandana Shiva: corporate monopoly of seeds must end | News on Seed Freedom | Scoop.it

In the area of seeds and biodiversity my advice to the corporations is simple. You are good at the technologies of warfare. Leave the seeds in the hands of women and small farmers. They have done a far better job.

Build a movement for seed freedom, to save seeds, to protect biodiversity, to reclaim farmers rights, to make patents on seed illegal, to roll back laws like the EU Seed Legislation that are criminalising farmers who use their own seeds.

Q: You are planning a fortnight of action on seed freedom from 2-16 October, can two weeks of action actually make any difference against the power of big business?

A:The fortnight of action is to intensify solidarity, synergy and awareness. Our movement for seed freedom will not stop on 16 October. We will continue until the last farmer and last seed is liberated.

Genetically modified food controversies

Genetically modified food controversies | News on Seed Freedom | Scoop.it

The key areas of controversy related to genetically modified (GM) food are: risk of harm from GM food, whether GM food should be labeled, the role of government regulators, the effect of GM crops on the environment, and GM crops' context as part of the industrial agriculture system.

There has never been a long-term study of the effects of a diet including GM food on humans, so no one can be certain whether such diet is as more, less, or as harmful as a diet without GM foods. Therefore, discussion of the safety of GM food is a matter of assessing the risk of harm.

Food and Chemical Toxicology - Long term toxicity of a Roundup herbicide and a Roundup-tolerant genetically modified maize

Food and Chemical Toxicology - Long term toxicity of a Roundup herbicide and a Roundup-tolerant genetically modified maize | News on Seed Freedom | Scoop.it

The health effects of a Roundup-tolerant genetically modified maize (from 11% in the diet), cultivated with or without Roundup, and Roundup alone (from 0.1 ppb in water), were studied 2 years in rats. In females, all treated groups died 2–3 times more than controls, and more rapidly. This difference was visible in 3 male groups fed GMOs.

GM crop enquiry launched by French government - Telegraph

GM crop enquiry launched by French government - Telegraph | News on Seed Freedom | Scoop.it
The French government has launched an inquiry into the safety of genetically modified crops after a study suggested GM maize could cause cancer in rats.

Dr Michael Antoniou, of King's College London, who contributed to the project, said: "This is the most thorough research ever published into the health effects of GM food crops and the herbicide Roundup on rats. It shows an extraordinary number of tumours developing earlier and more aggressively – particularly in female animals."

But leading British and international researchers criticised the research paper, claiming the researchers had used a breed of rat which is naturally susceptible to cancer, and that the control group was too small to draw any conclusions.

Anthony Trewavas, professor of cell biology at Edinburgh University, said: “Until you know the degree of variation in 90 or 180 control rodents these results are of no value. That is what should have been done and no doubt reflects the predetermined bias of the experimenters and the funding groups."

Prof Tom Sanders, head of nutritional sciences research at King’s College London, claimed the authors' analysis of their data was "unconventional", adding: "It would appear the authors have gone on a statistical fishing trip.”

Who stands for and against compulsory GMO labelling of food (Prop. 37, USA) | News on Seed Freedom | Scoop.it

According to research group MapLight, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to “revealing money’s influence on politics,” as of Oct. 3, Prop 37 advocates have spent $4.1 million on the “Yes on 37″ campaign, while opponents have spent over eight times as much, contributing $34.5 million to the “No on 37″ effort.

The highest contributor to “No on 37″ is Monsanto—who works closely with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on GMO projects in Africa—weighing in at over $7 million, followed by chemical giant DuPont at almost $5 million.

Also on the list at over $1 million each are PepsiCo, Nestle and Coca-Cola, all users of high fructose corn syrup.

The main donors for “Yes on 37″ include Mercola.com Health Resources at $1,100,000 and Nature’s Path Foods at $610,709. The Organic Consumer Organizations’ Committee for the Right to Know about GMOs and Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps have each contributed over $300,000.
