"The Trump administration’s Education Department announced on Thursday that it would begin notifying the borrowers on Friday that it is canceling about $150 million in federal loan debt, with about $80 million of that sum owed by students who attended the now-defunct Corinthian Colleges Inc. The action sets in motion the Obama administration’s 'borrower defense' rule, released in 2016 to provide debt relief to students victimized by predatory colleges."

Prominent past supporter of Walker encourages him to veto 'poor loser' legislation | News From Around the Web: WEAC | Scoop.it

"Prominent Milwaukee businessman and philanthropist Sheldon Lubar — a past Walker supporter — sent Walker an email Tuesday encouraging him to look beyond short-sighted machinations.' He promptly made the email public.

"I ask you not to destroy your reputation and side with Messrs. Vos & Fitzgerald," he wrote. "What they are planning for the Republican Party of Wisconsin will malign its integrity and lead to its downfall. Worse, it will damage Wisconsin as it ignores the will of the majority of Wisconsin voters."

Lame-duck session: Early voting limits sow confusion in run up to February election

Lame-duck session: Early voting limits sow confusion in run up to February election | News From Around the Web: WEAC | Scoop.it

"This will create an unnecessary hardship for a lot of voters. And I don't think creating unnecessary hardship is consistent with democracy," said Neil Albrecht, executive director of the Election Commission for the City of Milwaukee, where almost 10 percent of voters cast in-person absentee ballots in November's midterm elections.

Erin Grunze, executive director of the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin, said the move is inconsistent with its position that elections should be "free, fair and accessible to all."

"Anytime you reduce access to the polls, it's going to disenfranchise voters," said Grunze. "The league's position is that we shouldn't be curbing early voting. We should be opening it up so all communities can enjoy the larger window."

Groups to ask federal judge to quash Wisconsin's new early voting restrictions | News From Around the Web: WEAC | Scoop.it

"A coalition of liberal groups says it will ask a federal judge to halt enforcement of a new state law restricting early voting, in what may be the first of multiple court challenges to laws enacted by Republicans in a recent lame-duck session.

"Citizen Action of Wisconsin issued a statement Monday saying it is filing a motion Monday with federal Judge James D. Petersen 'asking the court to stop enforcement of early voting restrictions signed into law by Governor Walker on Friday.'

"The restrictions bar municipalities from beginning early voting earlier than two weeks before an election. Some large municipalities, such as Madison and Milwaukee, start more than 40 days before an election."

Scott Walker signs all three lame-duck bills into law | News From Around the Web: WEAC | Scoop.it

"Gov. Scott Walker Friday signed all three sweeping lame-duck bills into law in Green Bay, concluding an eleventh hour effort by Republican legislators to roll back some of the next governor's authority.

"Walker, who has faced national scrutiny and calls from Democrats to reject the legislative package entirely, said during the bill signing he was approving the three bills in full, without any line-item vetos. His remark was a shift from earlier this week, when he said he was considering at least one line-item veto of the legislation."
