Johanna Villasmil's insight:

India – A fire caused by a transformer explosion in a coal mine in western Turkey has left at least 200 people dead, Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said in a statement Wednesday.

The blast happened during a change in shifts, leading to uncertainty over the exact number of workers still in the mine, the Turkish news agency Cihan reported, citing labor union officials.

Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said 787 people were inside the coal mine in Soma at the time of the accident and 363 of them had been rescued so far. He said 76 miners were injured, including one who was in serious condition. The mine is located some 250 kilometers (155.35 miles) from Istanbul. Some of the workers were 420 meters (460 yards) deep inside the mine.

The incident involved an explosion in a transformer, said Energy Minister Taner Yildiz. "The rescue teams are very experienced," he said. "They know what they need to do."

Turkish President Abdullah Gül ordered Manisa governor to mobilize all resources for the rescue of the trapped workers, while Turkish army assigned a military aircraft to bring a group of experts from northern province of Zonguldak for the rescue operations.

About 100 rescuers, dozens of ambulances and helicopters were dispatched to the scene, the agency said.

SOMA Komur Isletmeleri A.S., which owns the mine, confirmed that a number of its workers were killed but would not give a specific figure. The company said the accident occurred despite the "highest safety measures and constant controls" and that an investigation was being launched.

The voting process started in Ukraine

By Johanna Villasmil, News Duet

May 11, 2014

Johanna Villasmil's insight:

India – Voting in two regions of eastern Ukraine opened Sunday, as pro-Russian separatists called for a split from the rest of the country.

The ballots seek approval to declare sovereign the so-called people's republics in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, where armed pro-Russia insurgents have taken control of government buildings and clashed with Ukrainian military troops.

Locals in Ukraine's predominantly Russian-speaking east went to the polls Sunday to vote in regional referendums on independence that have been called illegal and look set to further pit Russia against the West.

"We are working in very difficult conditions," said Yevgeny Afinogeyev, deputy chairman of a polling station in central Donetsk as transparent ballot boxes were being set up on Saturday. "Our local officials who are motivated only by their corrupt interests are putting sticks in the wheels. They are traitors."

Seven people have already died in clashes between pro-Russia insurgents and Ukrainian troops in the city of Mariupol — a major hub in eastern Ukraine. Today’s referendum seeks approval to declare so-called sovereign republics in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Yesterday’s vote mimics the March referendum in Crimea, the southern portion of Ukraine that was later annexed by Russia. But vote organizers have said a decision will be made later on whether to seek full independence, absorption by Russia or to stay part of Ukraine but with expanded power for the regions.
