Debt: Destroyer of Lives, Businesses, and Countries

Debt: Destroyer of Lives, Businesses, and Countries | Endurance Online Group | Scoop.it
Why an over-indebted government is the #1 threat to your well-being

by Dan Steinhart:

Dear Reader,

“Raise your hand if you’re scared of flying.” The professor of my Intro to Psychology course made this request of the class on the very first day of college. Of the 30 or so students in the room, six raised their hands.

“OK, put them down. Now raise your hand if you’re scared of driving.”

Not a hand was raised.

“Statistically, you’re much more likely to die in a car than a plane.”

Thirty blank stares awaited an explanation.

“You see, we humans aren’t as rational as we like to think. Driving is more dangerous than flying, but almost everyone is more scared to fly. That’s why the study of psychology is important: so we can identify and modify irrational thoughts.”

Even as a dumb 18-year-old, I knew my professor’s example was bogus. The mathematical odds of death are just one of several valid reasons to fear something. Another is a lack of control: flying makes me nervous because I’m putting my life in the hands of a stranger. There’s nothing irrational about that.

Debt worries me much more than flying, but for the same reason: I have no control over it. Not personal debt, of course: I have 100% control over my credit card, auto, student loan, and mortgage debt. I’m talking about Uncle Sam’s big, fat federal debt, which today stands at over $17.5 trillion. As one of 115 million taxpayers, my own personal portion of that is $152,000. Add in my wife’s share, and we’re up to $304,000. Do we have to include that in our net-worth calculation when we apply for a mortgage?

Nothing is as destructive as a government drowning in debt ...

Talking Money with Zack Arias | David duChemin

Talking Money with Zack Arias | David duChemin | Endurance Online Group | Scoop.it

Months ago I wrote a post called Photographers and Money, We Should Talk. The blog post seemed to get a lot of traction and generated a lot of comments and questions. Since then I’ve wanted to get my friend Zack Arias on the line and record a conversation about this stuff, because Zack’s made almost as many mistakes as I have, and has learned from them and spends his days making a living with the thing he loves. He is a man of integrity and, like me, a fan of the amateurs and anyone trying to do this for a living, whether that’s full-time, part-time, or some time in between. Between his chaotic schedule and my travels it’s taken 5 months to make this happen, but sat down this morning and had a conversation. I recorded it. Skype dropped us a couple times and the sound has some flaws, but I hope you’ll sit down with us and listen to this 55 minute conversation about money. Even more, I hope you’ll learn something, or be encouraged to make some changes. Getting your house in order financially, running a business, trying to do this for a living, it’s not easy – but I wouldn’t have it any other way........

Beat The System With This List Of 40 Free Educational Websites

Beat The System With This List Of 40 Free Educational Websites | Endurance Online Group | Scoop.it
According to www.webometrics.info, there are more than 17 000 universities in the world, but getting a degree in many of them is quite costly. Many students around the world(and their families) get into big debts or have to work over sixty hours a week in order to afford an Education. Two thirds of the US college seniors who graduated in 2011 had student loan debt, with an average of over 27 000 USD per person. Reading those statistics I can’t stop thinking about those words from over 30 years ago: With mass education, it turned out that most people could be taught to read and write. In the same way, once we have computer outlets in every home, each of them hooked up to enormous libraries, where you can ask any question and be given answers, you can look up something you’re interested in knowing, however silly it might seem to someone else. – Isaac Asiov Isaac Asimov died in 1992, but if he could see the opportunities that the Internet is giving us in XXI century he would probably grin from ear to ear. Getting a degree in an university might be expensive, but there are much better options. There are many websites on the Internet that now offer FREE of charge learning materials. Now even very poor people can afford to be better educated than many of Harvard’s graduates, all they need is access to a computer(does not even have to be personal one, it could be the one that the local library offers for public use) Enough with the words, here is a great list of 40 useful links which can help you learn a lot for free:   1. 11 Ways To Create Flavor Without Gluten, Dairy, Sugar Or Soy

11 Ways To Create Flavor Without Gluten, Dairy, Sugar Or Soy | Endurance Online Group | Scoop.it

"Toxins, stress, infections, poor diet and eating processed foods can lead to something called a "leaky gut," a condition in which cells in the gut react to foods, chemicals and toxins in such a way that cause the bonds in our intestinal lining to break apart. When this happens, particles of food slide into your bloodstream, triggering an immune response, causing food sensitivities and inflammation.

If you have leaky gut, you may be sensitive to certain foods. Gluten, dairy, soy, alcohol, processed foods and sugar may be out of your food regimen, but this doesn't mean your taste buds necessarily have to suffer. There are a handful of other flavor boosting options out there that will taste great and make you and your gut happy. Trust me, after 10 years of eating like this, and healing my gut, I've found some fabulous ways to whip up incredible recipes using real foods and amazing flavors."

Are you someone who is suffering with "leaky gut"? Leaky gut is, a condition which causes cells in your gut to react to foods, toxins, and chemicals in a way that causes a break in the intestinal lining to allow small particles of food to enter your bloodstream triggering an immune response which causes food sensitivities and inflammation. Yo may be sensitive to these types of food:  processed fake foods, sugar, gluten, dairy, soy, and alcohol. Even people who don't have "Leaky gut" would be wise to avoid or reduce these types of food from their meals. There are plenty of healthier foods to eat which can liven up your meals and keep you with a robust gut.

Health tips:  Use organic herbs and spices when you cook. Cinnamon livens up your desserts and helps with blood sugar issues. Ginger adds amazing taste  when grated into foods and aids your digestion. Ginger and cinnamon work well together. Cayenne wakes up your taste buds and gives a special oomph to chocolate treats. Just a little of any herb/spice  is all you need for immense flavor. Consider using organic seed oils mixed with vinegars as dressings for salads or to pour over roasted veggies. Use homemade or organic hummus for salads. Use chia, hemp, and flax seed for thickeners in your dishes and reap the benefits of omega 3-6-9 fatty acids. . Did you know that citrus fruits and zest can add zing to your salads, side dishes, and desserts? Use organic raw dates in place of refined sugar for all your sweets. Cinnamon, carob, and coconut butter offer a hint of sweetness too. Use avocado in place of dairy for creaminess in smoothies, puddings, salads, and desserts.

U.S. spring wheat yield prospects best in 22 years – scouts - The Western Producer

By Mark Weinraub

FARGO, North Dakota, July 24 (Reuters) – The U.S. spring wheat crop might be developing behind schedule, but yield prospects are spectacular.

The 2014 U.S. hard red spring wheat crop is projected to yield 48.6 bushels per acre, scouts on an annual crop tour said Thursday, the tour’s highest forecast in at least 22 years.

The estimate was based on samples from 373 spring wheat fields assessed during the Wheat Quality Council’s three-day tour of North Dakota, the top spring wheat state, and adjacent areas in Minnesota and South Dakota. The figure exceeds the tour’s 2013 forecast of 44.9 bushels per acre and its five-year average of 44.7.

USDA estimates the North Dakota spring wheat yield at 46 bushels per acre. The government is scheduled to release updated forecasts on Aug. 12.

The tour projected an average durum wheat yield of 36.6 bushels per acre, based on samples of 17 fields. The durum figure was down from 41.7 last year and below the five-year tour average of 38.1.

The spring wheat yield estimate is the highest in Wheat Quality Council records dating to 1992. The figure surpasses the previous tour record of 47 set in 1992, according to the group’s website.

Scouts cautioned that the current crop was at least four to six weeks from harvest.

“A lot of things could happen between now and then, and most of them are not good. But if it just keeps going, we could have a tremendous crop,” said tour leader Ben Handcock, executive vice president of the Wheat Quality Council.

Much of the crop was developing later than usual due to planting delays in the spring, although growing conditions since then have been ideal.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said 79 percent of North Dakota’s spring wheat had reached the heading phase by July 20, behind the five-year average of 83 percent.

“Some of that late, late stuff has a ways to go,” said Mark Weber, director of the Northern Crops Institute and a scout on the tour, adding, “A lot can happen.”

Potential threats include a hot and dry August that could limit grain fill and an early frost that could kill crops that have not reached maturity. Some late-planted wheat could get snowed on before it is harvested, Handcock said.

North Dakota is the largest U.S. producer of high-quality hard red spring wheat, which is used in bread and for blending, and durum wheat, which is used to make pasta.

Spring wheat prospects became more significant after drought in the southern Plains reduced this year’s harvest of hard red winter wheat, the largest U.S. wheat class, which is also used for bread.

The USDA projects 2014 production of hard red spring wheat at 520 million bu., up 30 million from 2013. The USDA sees U.S. all-wheat production at 1.992 billion bu.
