Authorities are scrambling to unravel the mystery of how Russell Dermond, 88, of Eatonton, Georgia, was reportedly decapitated, and his wife, 87, disappeared.
Gari Ramirez's insight:

"We need to assume, or at least pray, that Mrs. Dermond is still alive, and we desperately need to know her whereabouts," Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said Thursday.

Investigators are treating her disappearance as an abduction, he said. There is no indication she's a suspect, and there's "plenty" to indicate she was taken, he said. Her pocketbook, cell phone and vehicle were all at the million-dollar waterfront home where her husband's headless body was found.

The first of 1,200 truckloads of dirt began to be hauled out downtown Wednesday with the start of construction of the Oxbow flood bypass.

Over the next seven months, earthmovers will be digging a bypass channel that will be a quarter mile long and 200 to 300 feet wide, starting at McKinstry Street and ending at Napa Creek’s juncture with the Napa River.
