The Morgan Library & Museum - Qalam for Kids: Penning the Arabic Script

This workshop led by calligrapher Elinor Aishah Holland will introduce children to Arabic script calligraphy. Following a brief tour of the exhibition Treasures of Islamic Manuscript Painting from the Morgan, children will explore the traditional tools used by calligraphers for over a thousand years by writing a word in the Arabic script. They will then decorate that word based on both their imagination and traditional motifs, using historical techniques and art supplies, including gold. Appropriate for ages 6–12. This workshop is limited to families with children. There is a limit of two adult tickets per family.
Saturday, October 29, 2011, 2–4 p.m.

Plus, many apple picking places also offer cool kids' activities, like hay rides, petting zoos and mazes, and sell delicious doughnuts, homemade pies and fresh-pressed cider.

Portishead at Hammerstein Ballroom
English experimental-pop band Portishead returns to the States for its first North American tour since 1998, meaning this is many (non–All Tomorrow's Parties–attending) fans' first chance to hear live cuts from the band's excellent 2008 release Third. Check out our live preview here.

Hotly buzzed U.K. pop craftsman James Blake shares his sensual, melancholy dubstep in the ’Burg, complete with a live drummer and keyboardist-guitarist. Support comes from local dream-poppers Chairlift.

Thomas Dolby at 92YTribeca
Celebrated synth-pop eccentric Thomas Dolby delivers a lecture and performance themed around the forthcoming A Map of the Floating City, his first new studio album in two decades. Attendees will also get a look at a new "social networking transmedia" game that Dolby has designed. Talk about blinding us with science!

Black Star at Irving Plaza
Black Star, consisting of hip-hop heavyweights Mos Def and Talib Kweli, offers up a night of pointedly ungangsta rap. Black Star 2, the MCs' first collaborative album since the release of their 1998 debut Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, is slated to drop next year, so don't be surprised to hear some new cuts tonight.

Anthony Braxton Tri-Centric Festival at Roulette Brooklyn
Roulette's spacious new Downtown Brooklyn theater kicks off an extraordinary four-night festival, celebrating the fecund genius of avant-garde saxophonist, improviser and composer Anthony Braxton. Tonight's event ranges from the early Composition 30 to some of Braxton's latest concepts, "Pine Top Aerial Music" and "Falling River Music."

Ramblin' Jack Elliott at Highline Ballroom
Folk legend Ramblin' Jack Elliott—a student of Guthrie and a major influence on Dylan—is 80 years old and still cranking out his own brand of traditional folk songs, usually with a sense of humor to boot. His recent Anti- Records releases, of which 2009's A Stranger Here is the latest, shun rehearsed perfection and familiar repertoire, to striking effect.

Nuove mode culinarie - NYC best lobster rolls

Nuove mode culinarie - NYC best lobster rolls | New York I Love You™ | Scoop.it
