Where education technology will — and won’t — take us by 2024

Where education technology will — and won’t — take us by 2024 | Empowering e-Teachers | Scoop.it

Professor Larry Cuban:

With all of the above occurring, one would think that by 2024, age-graded schools and the familiar teaching and learning that occurs today in K-12 and universities  would have exited the rear door.

I do not think so. Getting access to powerful electronic devices for all students and teachers is surely a victory for those who believe in better technologies solving teaching and learning problems. But access does not guarantee use, especially the kind of use that vendors and ardent technophiles seek.

Tech in education - enhancement not destruction, just my not-so-humble opinion.

Aunty Alice's curator insight, December 26, 2013 1:34 PM

Better technology to solve learning and teaching problems is a great thought but should not be seen as the bottom line. Identifying the problems accurately so they can be focussed  on with purpose, practicing to put into the long term memory, motivating  and rewarding the student...have to be in the  mix too, not to mention self discipline and good mental and physical health.

Ivon Prefontaine, PhD's curator insight, December 26, 2013 2:58 PM

"None of these incremental changes herald the disappearance of K-12 age-graded public schools or the dominant patterns of teacher-centered instruction. What these gradual changes will translate into is an array of options for teaching and learning available to both teachers and students."

This is particularly disconcerting. Without a shift away from the way we have always done things, will education really meet the demands of th 21st Century?

[INFOGRAPHIC] An Overview of the Principles of Adult Learning

[INFOGRAPHIC] An Overview of the Principles of Adult Learning | Empowering e-Teachers | Scoop.it

By Nicole Legault

"After humming and hawing I decided that my third instructional design/learning themed infographic would be the Principles of Adult Learning. Now, I will be honest and say that while I knew a few principles (adults have experience, adults like control over their learning experiences, etc.) I was lacking in my overall knowledge in that area. Creating an infographic is a great cure to this. I need to research, read articles and gather the appropriate information. Then I have to boil it down to its most simple form and try to find visuals that represent what I am trying to communicate. Anyways, it’s a good learning process.

I

"thought I would jump online and quickly find the “list” of the 6 adult learning principles, or whatever. No such list exists. After much reading I have come to find out that there is no actual official consensus on what the principles of adult learning are. Many are generally agreed upon, but there is still much theoretical debate going on for each proposed principle.

"So here’s my disclaimer: there is no proven adult learning theory and the information in the infographic below is subject to much debate and differing opinions."

Giving Students Feedback With Kaizena (Voice Comments) Tutorial

Published on Sep 10, 2013

Use your voice to give students feedback about their papers in Google Docs. I've only played with this a little bit so far, but I'm really excited to be able to use Kaizena to give my students feedback this year. Being able to add links to resources and reuse those links for other students is so helpful. If you have questions I'm on twitter @JenRoberts1 and the guys who make kaizena are @kaizenaFB if you have feedback for them, or email founders@kaizena.com

Teaching With QR Codes

Teaching With QR Codes | Empowering e-Teachers | Scoop.it

"So, what are QR Codes, you ask?  Well, you know what barcodes are,  like when you buy something at the store and the clerk scans a code to enter the item and amount into the till?  The QR (Quick Response) Code is kind of like that, except that it offers much more information.  Quite often the QR Code will give you a link to a website, or a text message, image, etc.  To read the QR Code, you need to install a QR Code Reader onto your device.  There are many available for free.  I like using i-nigma, seen below. Simply open the app, point it at a QR Code and your device will do the rest.  Try it with the code above.  It should take you back to this blog."

What Is Successful Technology Integration?

What Is Successful Technology Integration? | Empowering e-Teachers | Scoop.it

Before we can discuss how to shift our pedagogy or the role of the teacher in a classroom that is integrating technology, it is important to first define what "technology integration" actually means. Seamless integration is when students are not only using technology daily, but have access to a variety of tools that match the task at hand and provide them the opportunity to build a deeper understanding of content.
