Using Social Media to Teach Visual Literacy in the 21st Century Classroom - Edutopia

Using Social Media to Teach Visual Literacy in the 21st Century Classroom - Edutopia | New spaces for learning | Scoop.it

"Increasingly, educators are acknowledging and welcoming the relative advantages of social media into the teaching and learning process. From creating school Facebook pages to connecting students with experts via Twitter, social media has taken root as a legitimate classroom learning and communication tool. The highly linguistic nature of social media allows us to create and consume ideas and information unlike ever before. Much attention has been given to composing an articulate blog post and condensing our messages to 140 characters or less. However, effective use of this 21st century technology requires that we not only become proficient in textual communication, but also in our ability to express ourselves and interpret others' ideas through visual literacy."

Acting and Empathy
Acting is a transformational experience. It is the art of communicating stories but it is also the art of receiving the stories that others are trying to tell you. Quite simply, it is the art of empathy.

Those who acquire some of acting’s basic skill sets can use them to become stronger leaders and more successful managers and negotiators. We have designed a week that will inspire actors and refine their skills. It will give other professionals invaluable insights into others and themselves.

Marcia Powell's curator insight, May 21, 2013 2:26 PM

This is great, because it talks about the evolution of #pbl, and tells me how I can get better as a teacher.   This should be of particular interest to anyone trying to transform their classroom.

Jenny Lussier's curator insight, May 21, 2013 9:06 PM

Great comparison!

I sort of think it's an on-going kind of journey. It's hard to get there in one jump. I see it as more of a gradual and intentional shift.

The DocsTeach App for iPad - National Archives

The DocsTeach App for iPad - National Archives | New spaces for learning | Scoop.it

"The DocsTeach App extends learning activities from the DocsTeach website to your students’ iPads.

Using the app, they can choose a topic, such as “Civics & Government” or “Postwar U.S. 1945–early 1970s,” and challenge themselves with a DocsTeach activity, interacting with stories, events, and ideas of the past. The activities are all based on primary source documents from the holdings of the National Archives, such as the U.S. Constitution, the canceled check for the purchase of Alaska, and Thomas Edison’s patent drawing for the light bulb.'
