The 8 Digital Skills Students Need for The Future ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

The 8 Digital Skills Students Need for The Future ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

Via Dr. Susan Bainbridge, John Shank
Ken Morrison's insight:

I feel that we are failing at 4 & 5.  The top three are also a problem. Yet, we seem to be paying more attention at improving those skills.  Especially when teaching creative students, we must help them improve their skills of communicating and 'selling' their ideas.  it is also a great shame that we are not doing a good job of educating our students about trends like SOPA, (etc), Net Neutrality, etc.

Learn about the story behind stopping SOPA from the people who did it!

Ken Morrison's insight:

Ken's Key Takeaway:

I haven't purchased this yet, but I will soon. It will be interesting and sad to read the story from the viewpoint of Aaron Swartz.  Swartz killed himself in January, 2013.

Keep the Internet Open

Keep the Internet Open | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

Ken's Key Takeaway:

The number of governments that censor Internet content has grown to 40 today from about four in 2002.

A strong call to action by internet Founding Father Vint Cert

More and more governments are trying to take away the Internet as we know it.

I also STRONGLY suggest watching this 4-minute video from the same organization that helped us understand SOPA last Fall:

From the archives...Paul Ryan turns against SOPA following a Reddit-based attack | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

Ken's Key Takeaway:

I'm doing a speech on the Free Internet, and I stumbled across this article.  So I wanted to share.  Ironically, I read an article this morning about President Obama's surprise appearance on Reddit this morning.

Ken

GOP Rep. Paul Ryan never sponsored the Stop Online Piracy Act. But the crowd at Reddit.com targeted him anyway -- and embraced a Democratic challenger. Read this article by Declan McCullagh on CNET News.

Ken's Key Takeaway.

I help my students appreciate and love Jeff Bezos.  He has a created a great life out of tough luck.  I hope that he takes ownership of this recent problem.  I am curious about what would happen if this user did not have the same social clout that she has.

NOTE:  I left a tag as SOPA for personal reference.  I do not feel that this is SOPA (etc.)-related

Holy Conflict of Interest

Holy Conflict of Interest | An Eye on New Media | Scoop.it

I am thankful that "Demand Progress Now" shared this with me a few days ago.  I highly support that group for sharing the news on the ground regarding our internet freedom.

Hollywood is waging an ongoing war against the Internet by pushing bills like SOPA and encouraging the Department of Justice to shut down websites -- and even imprison people -- just for aggregating links to sites that the movie industry doesn't...

Time to get angry....again.  CISPA might be more dangerous than SOPA.  If you will excuse the language, you will learn more via the Jon Stewart clip.  It is very disgusting to see our 'leaders' talk about this bill.  They are not doing their homework and we will pay the consequences.

Clay Shirky: Why SOPA is a bad idea

Clay Shirky always finds a way to make complicated topics simple and memerable.

This one is less promising than most of his talks.  But it is important for each of us to listen and act upon.

If you thought the National Security Agency's collection of Verizon phone-call data was bad, wait until you hear about PRISM, the seven-year-old, previously undisclosed classified government program that works with nine very major U.S.
Ken Morrison's insight:

I held back on sharing this because I was hoping that the public was over-reacting.

FYI: I can not keep up with all of the attacks on privacy, so I simply file them all under the Scoop.it tag of "SOPA" and/or "Privacy" or "Politics"  Most are tagged under all three, but I always use "SOPA"

Ken Morrison's insight:

This one is not a fun share. It is a reminder that the fight for internet freedom is never really over.  We need to keep tuned in to what is happening in Washington.

You can find my past shares on this topic (SOPA filter) below.  I Simply call it all "SOPA" because each of the new names of bills are just family members of the orginal ugly bill:

Yes! ACTA can be STOPPED, like SOPA! I Know How! Be a HERO SHARE this ACTA Video

Ken's Key takeaway:

Watch the first four minutes and you will want to watch the rest. I haven't done fact-checking yet, but my key takeaway is that CBS owns CNET. CNET proudly gave away the piracty programs and used massive resources to spread the programs around. Then they bragged about their SEO power. Now they take legal action on international users of the software that they spread. Just another reason to be disgusted at SOPA, ACTA, and simlar attempts to destroy web 2.0

"Disgusting!"  Don't let this happen.  About a year ago, the experts in our field were telling us that we don't really have to worry about SOPA, etc. but that we should be aware that some US 'leaders' were bold enough to consider it.  Seven months later, it almost passed.  We need to be alert to this UN move.
