UK TV goes handheld

UK TV goes handheld | New Digital Media | Scoop.it
The UK population consumes its media on a wider variety of platforms than ever before, and the ability to move music, television shows, podcasts and movies to any device and platform is their most desired new innovation, says the State Of The Media Democracy research conducted by Deloitte.
One quarter of those questioned wanted to be able to buy and download magazines, newspapers and books to any device they own, and nearly 30% wanted to store or back-up all of their media to the cloud.

How Hulu Is Becoming a Testbed for New TV Shows

How Hulu Is Becoming a Testbed for New TV Shows | New Digital Media | Scoop.it

Shows produced by Hulu will soon find their way onto traditional TV networks in the U.K. and elsewhere, thanks to a distribution deal between the TV catch-up site and Fremantle Media. The deal, which was announced Sunday night, gives Fremantle an exclusive first look at shows like Morgan Spurlock’s documentary series A Day in the Life, which Hulu is bringing back for a second season on Monday. It’s an interesting business proposition for Hulu, and it further establishes the site as a testbed for new TV content.

Under the agreement, Fremantle will be able to distribute Spurlock’s show and others worldwide, save for the U.S. and Japan, where Hulu has its own services up and running. Fremantle’s senior VP of acquisitions Jeff Tahler told me via email that the English-language markets like the U.K., Australia and New Zealand could be good homes for Hulu content. “But we expect to sell well beyond those,” he added.

Is Amazon getting into original TV?

Is Amazon getting into original TV? | New Digital Media | Scoop.it

Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube are all betting big on original content. Now, Amazon may be doing the very same.

At least that is what appeared to be the case for a fleeting few hours March 6 on LinkedIn. Joe Lewis, a new executive with the tech giant based in Los Angeles, briefly listed his title as Vice President of Original Television at Amazon. Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment. However, Lewis' job title changed moments after Fortune's request for additional details. He is currently listed as Vice-President, Production at Amazon Studios.

If Amazon do get into the internet on-demand video original content business it would certainly make the Kindle Fire even more enticing.

Vizio and Google announce the VAP430 standalone Google TV streamer | New Digital Media | Scoop.it

Google TV is alive and kicking at CES this year, but with Logitech backing out of standalone units, who’s going to pick up the pieces? Vizio and Google just announced the Vizio VAP430 Stream Player. This is a standalone unit that will turn any HDTV into an enhanced VIZIO Internet Apps Plus and smart TV incorporating the latest Google TV. It includes a Chrome browser and will play music, video, and pictures stored on any computer, hard drive, or smart phone connected to a local network or the cloud. Just like the Logitech Revue, it has a pass-through HDMI port for your cable or satellite box, which creates a seamless television experience.
