Student Expelled, Charged With Felonies For Same-Sex Relationship (May 19, 2013) | New A.P. Government Article | Scoop.it
A Florida teenager faces criminal charges stemming from her relationship with another young female student.
Ashley Roberts's insight:

Quarter 4, Week 6 (May 12-19)

A student in Florida was expelled from school and charged with a felonie of abuse of a minor. She was dating a person of the same sex when her girlfriends parents charged abuse charges against her. The girl being charged's parents said that the other girls parents never said anything until now about this and are purposefully out to get her. Those opposing this type of this case are saying that there is no need to do this and ruin a girls life because of your own beliefs, and I agree with them.

Rape Culture Celebration on T-shirts (May 4th, 2013)

Rape Culture Celebration on T-shirts (May 4th, 2013) | New A.P. Government Article | Scoop.it
How computers take the blame for offensive sexist T-shirts that are celebrating rape and violence while the companies producing and selling them get to keep calm and carry on.
Ashley Roberts's insight:

Quarter 4, Week 4 (April 28-May 4)

Even with all the uprisings lately about rape culture and how rampant it is un our culture today the company that makes the "Keep Calm & *fill in the blank*" shirts is making shirts supporting a rape culture with shirts showed above. First showed on Amazon, they were forced to pull them off due to other scandals they've had in the past few months. No one will take blame for them leaving everyone questioning, "What is happening in our world?" There is nothing okay about these shirts, and hopefully justice will be had.

Obama Budget to Boost Energy Technologies and Research (Apr. 10, 2013) | New A.P. Government Article | Scoop.it
President Obama's budget would increase spending on renewable energy and research by 50 percent.
Ashley Roberts's insight:

Quarter 4, Week 1 (April 7-13)

Last Wednesday Obama released his 2014 Energy Plan. Some of the new ideas include: cutting tax breaks for the oil industry, increase funding for the wind energy research and a decrease in funding for new nuclear -power technologies. According to some people, this plan is biased against natural gas and clean coal. On top of all this, the U.S. Air Force has just released its own Energy Plan saying that they will start a shift towards energy efficiency and use of renewables.

Sequester This! And Please Stop The Childish Whining! (2/26/13)

Sequester This! And Please Stop The Childish Whining! (2/26/13) | New A.P. Government Article | Scoop.it
We spend far too much, period.
Ashley Roberts's insight:
As we all know the sequester has been going on for quite a while with no agreement even close to being reached. At this point the nation is wondering if an agreement will ever come or if we will just constantly push back a date to push back another date. Looking at the budget now, it'll leave the next generation with 20+ trillion dollars to deal with. Not only that, but our debt is 3.8 billion dollars right now, which means in order to pay it all off now, every person would need to pay 12,000 dollars. That's an insane amount of money and impossible to accomplish, so why isn't the government doing anything about it? The answer is simple, no one will swallow their pride to come to an agreement for the better of the country. However, as these people leave, people exactly like them come back in leaving us with no progress.

The Nobel Peace Prize For Drone Strikes Goes To? (2/14/13)

The Nobel Peace Prize For Drone Strikes Goes To? (2/14/13) | New A.P. Government Article | Scoop.it
Kudos to the Pres. Not so to his followers.
Ashley Roberts's insight:
Recently President Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize for, according to this reporter, his ability to out drone President Bush. Even though the author of the article focuses a lot on his own opinion on the issue there are some clear facts that should be pointed out. For example, when Bush sent drones and started out doing other presidents, the United States had a "mental breakdown" and never forgave Bush for it. However, even though Obama has been ignoring some of his other promises he made during the election processes of 2008 and 2012 the US is totally okay with him receiving a Nobel Peace Prize for what they yelled at Bush for. Yes, the circumstances are different now then when Bush was president but people should still pay attention to the facts brought up in this article.

Are Newt's Grandiose Moon Base Plans Safe? (01/29/13)

Are Newt's Grandiose Moon Base Plans Safe? (01/29/13) | New A.P. Government Article | Scoop.it
GOP contender Newt Gingrich has been repeating a desire to send Americans to the Moon, and beyond. Can he promise to do it safely?
Ashley Roberts's insight:

GOP President, Newt Gingrich, is pushing for a new space program. The basis of Newt's idea is to have a station on the Moon and then eventually progress into having stations on Mars and other planets. However, Gingrich is focusing more on money rather than safety which worries everyone, even those where space program jobs are absolutely necessary are worried abotut the safety of the machines. When questioned about these worries, Newt's response was to compare the proposal to WWII need for pilots learning to fly "because they had to." However, those who oppose him say that we don't "have" to go to space when in WWII we actually needed pilots and the deaths that we encountered when teaching those pilots was trumped by the gains we had in WWII.

Looking into it the author of the article proves that Newt isn't really thinking everything through. Considering his past of having large, fantastic ideas and no follow through makes me believe that Newt will do nothing with this proposal of renewal of space programs and even if he tries, it'll fizzle out just like everything else he's attempted to do in the recent past.

House approves $50.7 billion in superstorm aid (1/15/13)

House approves $50.7 billion in superstorm aid (1/15/13) | New A.P. Government Article | Scoop.it
More than 10 weeks after Superstorm Sandy brutalized parts of the heavily populated Northeast, the House approved $50.7 billion in emergency relief for the victims Tuesday night as Republican leaders struggled to close out an episode that exposed...
Ashley Roberts's insight:

After SuperStorm Sandy the North East is practically begging for relief. When Congress saw the need for money and help the House started a bill to get the Northeast some help. The vote went through with a 241-180 vote, even though there was some opposition. Even though some conservative Southerners tried to decrease the $5.7 billion dollar bill the Democrats pushed through making sure those who were effected got their share. Rep. Carolyn Maloney of New York made the point that the Republicans seem to be having a double standard by sending money to Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Missourit for tornado relief and money for hurricane relief in the South east, but won't send money to the Northeast for the second biggest storm of the century.

Lieberman: Fiscal Cliff Deal 'Not A Certainty' (11/25/2012)

Lieberman: Fiscal Cliff Deal 'Not A Certainty' (11/25/2012) | New A.P. Government Article | Scoop.it
Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) warned Sunday that while congressional hopes remain high to reach an agreement on the so-called fiscal cliff, a deal is "not a certainty."
Ashley Roberts's insight:

Besides the "doomsday" theories and worries, people have been stressing about the fiscal cliff politicians have been saying we're getting dangerously close to. Senator Joe Lieberman commented, however, that although there is a large amount of hope it's almost impossible to be certain if there will be an agreement reach about the fiscal cliff. Obama has promised to let the Bush tax-cuts to expire and republicans have said that there is a large amount of flexibility on adjusting deductions and closing loopholes that they want to be rid of in the tax rates.

The Petraeus affair: A lot more than sex (11/14/12)

The Petraeus affair: A lot more than sex (11/14/12) | New A.P. Government Article | Scoop.it
Unlike many stories about powerful Washington figures having secret affairs, the downfall of spy chief David Petraeus goes deeper than sex.
Ashley Roberts's insight:

A few days ago news was discovered that David Patraeus, CIA Chief, was having an affair with a woman. Then, it was discovered there were two more women. Now there is news that he could possibly be involved with a scandal that goes as deep as national security and September 11, 2011. Patraeus resigned after acknowledging his mistake and the damage it did to his position and reputation, but there are still questions of what other things this man could have done and the damage he may have caused. He is scheduled to testify later on in the week.

Mitt Romney Releases Auto Ad That Misleads On Facts (10/29/12) | New A.P. Government Article | Scoop.it
WASHINGTON -- The Mitt Romney campaign, still attempting to turn the politics of the auto bailout in its favor, is out with a new television ad that dramatically bends both historical record and current news to fit its narrative.
Ashley Roberts's insight:

According to the "Huffington Post" Mitt Romney released a new TV add, attempting to use the auto bailout to his favor. However, after checking facts, it was discovered that Romney had severely skewed facts and historical basis. However, because the wording is so clever, it doesn't directly state anything that could be called a boldfaced lie. The article above then goes on into serious detail covering the the add line by line to describe which parts are correct and incorrect.

Walter De Vries, who worked for George W. Romney throughout the 1960s, issues a 700-word essay that attacks Mitt Romney and his presidential campaign.
Ashley Roberts's insight:

Romney's father, George W.Romney, was very good friends with Walter De Vries who also was a huge aide to the G. W. Romney in th 1960s had a few not so nice comments about Mr. Mitt Romney. According to Walter De Vries, Mitt Romney's attempt to earn a place in the White House was a terrible attempt compared to his father's terms as governor. Walter De Vries commented that Mitt Romney was constantly changing his stand on certain issues and his only redeeming quality was that he would do anything to close a deal. Hoever, Mr. Walter De Vries said that George Romney was a great govenor and was a strong politician and policy maker; not only that but he held his position on issues. According to Walter De Vries, maybe America will be better off without Mr. Mitt Romney.

Obama Administration Knew Of Terrorist Threats In Libya Before Attack (10/2/12) | New A.P. Government Article | Scoop.it

The Obama administration apparently knew about the attack in Libya before it even happened. However they tried to hide it from America because it wasn't a response to the anti muslim video but instead a terrorist attack. Of course, if America cuaght wind of this, especially in a Presidential Speech, everyone would go crazy. So the Obama Administration said they knew nothing about it and that it was just a response to the video of being antimuslim. If they're lying to us about this, what else are they lying to us about?

Animals' function in party pill testing bypassed by politicians (May 10, 2013)

Animals' function in party pill testing bypassed by politicians (May 10, 2013) | New A.P. Government Article | Scoop.it
Animal welfare advocates outraged at the possibility of party pills and synthetic cannabis being tested on rats and dogs have been "gagged" by politicians, a Labour MP says.
Ashley Roberts's insight:

Quarter 4, Week 5 (May 5-11)

There was an outrage lately over a possiblity of animals being tested on with marijuana poducts and party pills. The company doing the testing, health professionals, and and retailers were all invited to speak before the committee. Even though major commitee chairpersons were saying that this was outside of their scope the company asked for everyone to be heard before any decisions were made. However, the committee didn't agree and denied that request. The main objective of the bill was to make manufacturers demonstrate that their products were "low risk", however it didn't get far enough to make that impact.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Two senators hope to require political groups to name the donors who spend millions of dollars to influence federal campaigns.
Ashley Roberts's insight:

Quarter 4, Week 3 (April 21-27)

Congressman are attempting to get a bill passed that would force SUPERPACS to reveal who is donating millions or billions of dollars towards compaigns. Critics say that major influences on elections should be transparent. A lot of people have asked for this to happen in the past, however it's never happened. It would lead to a lot of wanted transparency but also a lot of upheaval in those that donate. I definitely think it would be a good idea, but with consequences as well.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has signed into law a bill that repeals some financial disclosure requirements for higher paid federal officials.

Obama signed a bill into a law repealing some of financial endorsment requirments for federal employees who make large amounts of money. Reason being to stop the possibility of identity theft in the federal governments. The President, VP, and other important appointees still have to disclose, but people are still very upset about it. Those against it say that it is an overreaction to the possiblity of identity theft. Although it's still to early to tell the effects it'll have the bill may or may not be a good thing.

Here's To The New Form Of Liberalism. Not!

Here's To The New Form Of Liberalism. Not! | New A.P. Government Article | Scoop.it
Go along to get along. Or be destroyed.
Ashley Roberts's insight:
In this article it's pointed out that many years ago people could have different views and still shake hands and be friends. However, now-a-days it's the exact opposite. The idea here is that the reason for this is because of the evolution of journalism regarding politics. Instead of reporting on hard news, political articles are simple opposite sides bashing on each other; no wonder no one can agree. Another idea present in this article is that free speech doesn't even exist anymore due to the fact that whenever you say anything you risk your reputation and job are forever ruined.

If a Company You Use Gets Hacked, Don't You Want to Know? (2/22/13) | New A.P. Government Article | Scoop.it
To Disclose or Not to Disclose a Hack Attack?
Ashley Roberts's insight:
Lately, on many many social networking sites, hackers have been having a free for all breaking into various accounts. Although they alluded to different groups like Anonymous and LulzSec, no one has actually had the blame pinned on them. However, the question isn't how did it, but whether or not the companies that have been hacked are telling you that or not. Companies fear that if they release that they've been hacked their stock will go down, they will lose credibility, and seem selfish and irresponsible. Not only that, but what if this happens to your bank? Wouldn't you want to know if your online bank account has the potential to be hacked? Some believe that it will worry the citizens of the US however, there is a positive side. If companies start popping up and speaking when they've been hacked, the government could upgrade their cyber-security which would benefit everyone.

Tea Party Community, an Unsocial Facebook Rival? (02/03/13)

Tea Party Community, an Unsocial Facebook Rival? (02/03/13) | New A.P. Government Article | Scoop.it
Conservatives have their own online gated community, designed to keep out progressive voices. Is this going to be an unsocial network?
Ashley Roberts's insight:

The Tea Party Community has made a new "Facebook" only for conservatives. This new social media was made when conservatives were having their posts deleted and even some of their profiles deleted for posting their beliefs and ideals. Therefore, they created this community with the idea of only for conservatives; no progressives allowed. There is still a warning that the owners of the website can delete comments, posts, or profiles if things they say are offensive or obscene.

However, the author of the article shows that this website is more for winning elections rather than for a sense of community. The head of the Tea Party Movement (TPM) says that they lost the 2012 election because they are very disorganized and hope that this website will help fix that.

Although no one knows why they immitated Facebook so much, people do know that the numbers of people signing up for the new social media site is growing everyday, so maybe this will be a new turn for the better for the TPM.

Among the 800,000-strong crowd on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., were some suburban Democrats who traveled east to see President Barack Obama's second inauguration.
Ashley Roberts's insight:

The Daily Herald set up post at the inauguration allowing people to stop by and talk about the inauguration and President Obama's speech. Some, who had even worked with Obama when he was in the State Legislature commented that seeing him up there was inspiring and motivational, and that the second inauguration proved that his first term and running for election wasn't a joke. Others even compared the inauguration to angels speaking. Although no one commented anything negative, people definitely loved Obama's speech.

Paul Krugman: GOP Fiscal Cliff Offer 'Pathetic' (12/02/12)

Paul Krugman: GOP Fiscal Cliff Offer 'Pathetic' (12/02/12) | New A.P. Government Article | Scoop.it
Paul Krugman offered a harsh analysis of the Republican plan to deal with the "fiscal cliff." "This is pathetic – and these people are definitely not serious," he wrote on Sunday.
Ashley Roberts's insight:

An update on the fiscal cliff: Paul Krugman says that the Republicans offer to alleviate the fiscal cliff is "pathetic" and that "these people can't be serious". Sounds harsh but when looking at the facts like, it puts senoiors at risk and the offer just isn't enough, make Mr. Krugman seem quite correct. The fact that republicans and democrats are constantly fighting over the fiscal cliff makes everything even worse. Will we ever reach a decision about this?

Facts About Doomsday 2012 (11/18/12) | New A.P. Government Article | Scoop.it
Is the world going to end right in the middle of the upcoming holiday season? While that wouldn't be good for retail sales, many people feel that Dec.
Ashley Roberts's insight:

When anyone says December 21, 2012 people automatically think "doomsday" but NASA is attempting to derail these ideas that the world is going to end. For a while now people have been worried that the world will end due to something hitting Earth in space, or Earth being sucked into a black hole, or tons of natural disasters going on around the world on that day. However, NASA says that this "Doomsday" will not happen because all of the ideas of what will happen are completely impossible with no scientific basis behind them. Even Americans don't believe it, showed a poll that said only 1 in 10 Americans are worried they won't make it past December 21, 2012.

'Gender Gap' Near Historic Highs (10/21/12)

'Gender Gap' Near Historic Highs (10/21/12) | New A.P. Government Article | Scoop.it
The biggest gender gap to date in the exit polls came in 2000, when Al Gore won by 11 points among women, but George W. Bush won by 9 points among men - a 20-point difference. The numbers this year look very close to that.
Ashley Roberts's insight:

According to researchers Obama will has a huge gender gap of voters in America. If women were the only ones voting,Obama would win by a landslide, kind-of like in his campaign against John McCaine in 2008. However, when looking at just men it seems to be the exact opposite; quote, "[i]f only men voted, Mr. Obama would be biding his time until a crushing defeat at the hands of Mitt Romney. . ." and then shortly later on in the article relating the defeat of Mr. Obama by Mitt Romney to the election in 1980 against Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter. This idea of a gender gap isn't new to the American people however, and has been going on since the 1970s, studies show. However, the question lies in that, what happens to the election when both women and men vote?
