European Framework for the Digital Competence of Educators: DigCompEdu

European Framework for the Digital Competence of Educators: DigCompEdu | 21st Century Challenges | Scoop.it

As the teaching professions face rapidly changing demands, educators require an increasingly broad and more sophisticated set of competences than before. In particular the ubiquity of digital devices and the duty to help students become digitally competent requires educators to develop their own digital competence.

What is Design Thinking? Innovation | Campbell School of Innovation

What is Design Thinking? Innovation | Campbell School of Innovation | 21st Century Challenges | Scoop.it

What is Design Thinking?

Design thinking is an empathy based, creative problem solving process embraced by innovators around the world for addressing complex problems. At its heart, it nurtures the ability to see a situation from someone else's point of view, engineer a solution, and then test and refine your solution based on feedback. It is one approach CSI students will use to master the California Common Core State Standards and build the adaptable thinking skills they will need for success in the 21st century workforce.

Maddison Kirkpatrick's curator insight, May 24, 6:57 AM
EXTENDED CURATED INSIGHT This article presents how blogs can be used in the classroom and how this platform can transform student learning. Blogs are more than a tool to record and store information. Blogs help to generate higher quality learning, particularly writing, due to a live authentic audience. Blogs generate more discussion and feedback than the verbal alternative. It gives students the privacy to write their opinion, edit and refine their point of view prior to being evaluated by peers. Many skills are involved in blogging, including a variety of writing genres as well as digital citizenship. The author points out that modelling and levels and engagement must be aligned to student age and ability. This is something that can be determined prior to unit activities with a diagnostic tool or assessment. Blogs allow students to receive quality feedback from teachers and peers, as well as learn to write feedback for others. This is a skill that has previously overlooked by many educators. Blogs also allow parents a chance to view their child’s learning progress and acknowledge their efforts. The author of this article considers six main factors for consideration when planning to use blogs as a learning tool. These include, duration, privacy, content, reflection, quality and control. Each of these aspects must be relevant to subject content and assessment outcomes. I intend to use these principles as the foundation for my mini learning sequence. Students will create a virtual tour of selected locations that are highly urbanised. They will display this tour using a blog. The tour will include a variety of mediums, including, writing, commenting and feedback, videos, photos and online tools. A blog will allow students to communicate their newly found knowledge to an authentic audience, give and receive feedback from their peers, and gain a number of writing and ICT skills that meet both subject content descriptors and general capabilities. As students will complete this task in year 8 geography I must consider each tasks; duration, privacy, content, reflection, quality and control. Students will complete engaging, quality learning activities that suit the short duration due to curriculum of two 70-minute lessons per week, student privacy and digital citizenship, curriculum relevant content, sufficient time for reflection on learning and a controlled and modelled teaching sequence that will provide students with a scaffold to reach success. To view my mini lesson sequence go to my weebly site and click the ‘mini learning sequence’ tab: https://misskirkpatricklovestoteach.weebly.com/ ;
WillCan's curator insight, May 26, 9:24 PM
I have read about the value of students reflecting on their progress in a journal. I think it was part of Marzano’s work around ASOT. There is great value in this kind of journaling: there is a consolidation of knowledge and skills (use or lose it), and students become more self-aware of their own learning styles and preferences. Being able to follow this process in the form of a blog ups the ante so to speak, quite considerably. As you point out, blogs facilitate collaboration and generate discussion and enhance reflection. Involving parents in their child’s learning is an area that schools are working on with their Learner Management Systems. One school I visited had a ‘Parent’s Lounge’. While much of this was about opening up policies and procedures and communicating information to parents, it would be valuable if such an LMS provided links (for parents) to their child’s blog (or other online learning). I can see this involving parents even more and building a learning community that is more open and engaged.
